Walk into most college classrooms and you’ll notice the same setup: rigid rows of desks, bare walls, fluorescent lighting, and a chalkboard at the front. It’s functional, sure – but is it actually helping students learn? In the late 1970s, environmental psychologists Robert Sommer and Helge Olsen asked exactly this question. Their answer was the “soft classroom” – a redesigned learning space that replaced hard, institutional furniture with cushioned seating, warm lighting, and aesthetic details. The results were striking: students participated more, enjoyed classes more, and actually preferred spending time in the room. Decades later, the soft classroom remains one of the most compelling examples of how physical environments shape the way we learn.

What is a soft classroom?
The term “soft classroom” was coined by Robert Sommer and Helge Olsen in their 1980 study published in Environment and Behavior. They took a standard university classroom at the University of California, Davis – the kind most students would describe as drab, sterile, and institutional – and transformed it. Out went the rigid straight rows of desks. In came semicircular, cushion-covered bench seating, adjustable lighting, carpeting, and fabric wall decorations. Portable writing boards replaced fixed chalkboards. The entire room was designed to feel less like an institution and more like a space where people would actually want to spend time.
The goal wasn’t just cosmetic. Sommer and Olsen were testing a core idea in environmental psychology: that the physical surroundings directly shape human behavior, emotions, and cognitive performance. If a classroom felt cold and rigid, it would produce cold and rigid interactions. If it felt warm and inviting, students might open up, engage, and participate more freely.

What makes a soft classroom “soft” isn’t just one thing – it’s a combination of design choices that work together to create a fundamentally different learning atmosphere. Here are the core elements:
Cushioned, semicircular seating
Instead of individual hard chairs bolted into straight rows, the soft classroom uses fabric-covered benches arranged in semicircular formations. This layout does two things at once. First, it’s physically more comfortable – students aren’t sitting on rigid plastic for an hour. Second, the semicircular arrangement means students can see each other’s faces, not just the backs of each other’s heads. As research from Yale’s Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning notes, seating arrangements directly affect student-student and student-teacher interactions. When everyone is facing inward, conversation flows more naturally.
Adjustable lighting
Harsh fluorescent lighting is a hallmark of traditional classrooms, and it contributes to fatigue and discomfort. The soft classroom replaced this with adjustable lighting that could be modified depending on the activity. Research on classroom environments has consistently found that lighting quality – especially access to natural or warm light – positively influences student performance. The addition of carpeting and fabric on the walls served multiple purposes. It softened the acoustics, reducing the echo and ambient noise that make it hard to hear in large rooms. It also changed the visual character of the room entirely – replacing cold concrete or tile with textures that feel domestic rather than institutional. These seemingly minor aesthetic touches carry significant psychological weight. When a room looks cared-for and intentionally designed, occupants tend to treat it – and each other – with more respect and warmth.
Portable writing boards
Rather than a single fixed blackboard at the front of the room (which reinforces the one-way teacher-to-student lecture model), portable writing boards could be moved around and used by students during group activities. This feature encouraged active participation and collaboration, rather than passive note-taking.
What the research found
Sommer and Olsen didn’t just redesign the room and hope for the best. They rigorously measured the outcomes. The results were clear: students in the soft classroom participated significantly more than students in traditional straight-row classrooms. This included not just answering the instructor’s questions, but initiating student-to-student discussions – a type of engagement that is notoriously hard to generate in conventional lecture settings.
Student attitudes toward the redesigned room were overwhelmingly positive. Students described the space as more comfortable, more inviting, and more conducive to learning. They didn’t just tolerate the room – they actively preferred it and sought it out.
The 17-year follow-up
Perhaps the most remarkable part of this story comes from a follow-up study conducted 17 years later by Wong, Sommer, and Cook (1992). By that point, the soft classroom had deteriorated significantly. Maintenance had been neglected, the cushions were worn, and the overall aesthetic appeal had declined. Yet even in its degraded state, the room continued to outperform traditional classrooms in terms of student participation. Students and faculty still preferred it and actively chose to use it.
This finding is important because it suggests that the benefits of the soft classroom aren’t purely about novelty or aesthetics. The fundamental spatial layout – semicircular seating that promotes face-to-face interaction – continued to drive engagement even when the surface-level charm had faded. The design itself, not just the decoration, was doing the heavy lifting.
Why traditional classrooms fall short
To understand why soft classrooms work, it helps to understand what’s wrong with the standard setup. Traditional classrooms were designed for efficiency, not engagement. Straight rows maximize the number of bodies you can fit into a room while keeping all attention directed at a single authority figure at the front. This layout emerged from an industrial-era model of education where information flows one way: teacher to student.
The problems with this are well-documented. As Sommer’s own earlier research on classroom ecology showed, students sitting in the front and center of straight-row classrooms participate far more than those in the back or at the sides. The seating position literally determines how engaged a student is likely to be. Students at the back are more prone to distraction, inattention, and disengagement – not because of personal failings, but because the environment discourages their participation.
Traditional classrooms also tend to be aesthetically barren. Bare walls, uniform desks, and harsh lighting create what Sommer called “hard architecture” – environments designed to control behavior rather than support well-being. This one is straightforward. When students are physically uncomfortable – sitting on hard seats, squinting under harsh lights, straining to hear over background noise – cognitive resources get diverted away from learning and toward coping with discomfort. Research published by Cheryan and colleagues at the University of Washington confirms that structural features like lighting, noise levels, and temperature regulation significantly affect student achievement. Comfortable students simply have more mental bandwidth available for learning.
Spatial arrangement shapes social behavior
Environmental psychologists have long understood that the arrangement of furniture in a room determines how people interact. Semicircular and horseshoe-style seating arrangements promote eye contact and face-to-face communication, which are the building blocks of meaningful classroom discussion. In traditional rows, students primarily see the instructor and the back of the person in front of them. In a soft classroom, they can see their peers, read facial expressions, and respond to each other directly. This naturally encourages dialogue rather than passive reception.
Aesthetics influence emotional states
Environments that are visually pleasing produce positive emotional states, which in turn facilitate learning and memory formation. This isn’t just about making things look nice. As the field of environmental psychology recognizes, physical settings operate along three dimensions simultaneously – the person, the place, and the psychological process. A well-designed room can foster feelings of belonging and ownership, which increases motivation and willingness to participate.
Flexibility signals openness
Portable furniture and flexible layouts send a subtle but powerful message: this is a space where different things can happen. Fixed rows communicate rigidity and hierarchy. Movable seating communicates adaptability and collaboration. When students feel they have some agency over their physical environment – even as simple as choosing where to sit on a curved bench – they tend to feel more invested in the learning process.
Modern evidence supporting the soft classroom concept
Sommer and Olsen’s work from 1980 laid the foundation, but the core ideas have been validated repeatedly in the decades since. A large-scale study from the University of Salford found that classroom design factors – including flexibility, light, and visual stimulation – can influence academic progress by up to 25%. The three most important environmental principles they identified were naturalness (light, temperature, air quality), individualization (ownership and flexibility), and appropriate level of stimulation (color and complexity).
More recently, research on flexible seating in higher education has found that approximately 80% of students report positive effects from non-traditional seating arrangements, including greater comfort, increased focus, and reduced anxiety. A study highlighted by the National Education Association found that 78% of students reported better concentration with flexible seating, and 64% said it helped them participate more. Students with ADHD and other neurodivergent conditions showed even greater benefits, with 88% reporting improved concentration.
These findings are a direct extension of the soft classroom philosophy: when you design a room around the needs of the humans in it – rather than around administrative convenience – learning outcomes improve.
Challenges and practical considerations
Despite the evidence, soft classrooms have not become the standard. Several barriers stand in the way.
Institutional standardization
Universities and schools operate on systems of standardization. Rooms are assigned based on capacity, and capacity is calculated using fixed formulas. A soft classroom with semicircular bench seating fits fewer students than the same room with straight rows. For administrators focused on maximizing room usage, this can feel like an inefficient use of space. Sommer and Olsen themselves noted the difficulty of fitting an innovative design within a bureaucratic system built around standardized spaces and functions.
Maintenance and cost
Cushioned seating and carpeting require more maintenance than hard plastic chairs and tile floors. The 17-year follow-up study made this point clearly – the room had deteriorated significantly because institutional maintenance systems weren’t designed to care for non-standard materials. The upfront cost of conversion and ongoing maintenance can be a barrier, particularly in underfunded educational institutions.
Faculty adaptation
Teaching in a soft classroom requires a different approach. Instructors who rely heavily on lecture-based delivery may not see the benefits. The soft classroom is designed for interactive, discussion-based pedagogy. Without a corresponding shift in teaching methods – what Sommer called “open education” as distinct from merely an “open classroom” – the physical redesign alone won’t reach its full potential.
What we can learn from the soft classroom today
The soft classroom concept doesn’t require a complete overhaul of every learning space. Its principles can be applied incrementally. Replacing some rigid seating with comfortable alternatives, adding warm lighting, introducing fabric elements or acoustic panels, and rearranging desks from straight rows into semicircles or clusters – these are all accessible steps that draw on the same research.
The deeper lesson is that physical environments are never neutral. Every classroom communicates something to the students who walk into it. Straight rows of hard desks say: sit still, face forward, listen. A soft classroom says: get comfortable, look around, talk to each other. The research consistently shows that the second message produces better learning outcomes.
As educational institutions continue to think about how to improve student engagement and outcomes, the soft classroom remains a powerful reminder that sometimes the most effective intervention isn’t a new curriculum or teaching technique – it’s a better chair.
