What is environmental psychology?
Environmental psychology is a branch of psychology that investigates how physical environments – both natural and built – influence human behavior, emotions, and cognition. It asks: how does the space around a person affect what they think, feel, and do?

Kurt Lewin’s 1936 field theory proposed that behavior is a function of both the person and their environment – a concept that laid crucial groundwork. However, Lewin’s definition of “environment” leaned heavily toward the social, not the physical.
The real precursor came from Roger Barker, a developmental psychologist who rejected the artificiality of laboratory experiments. In 1947, Barker established a field research station in Oskaloosa, Kansas, where he observed children’s everyday behavior in real-world settings. His work gave rise to the concept of behavior settings – the idea that specific social and physical environments systematically shape how people act. Barker’s approach, known as ecological psychology, became a direct ancestor of environmental psychology.
Another major early influence was Egon Brunswik, a Hungarian psychologist who introduced the concept of “environmental probability” in 1943. Brunswik argued that psychology had forgotten it was fundamentally a science about the relationship between organisms and their environments – an idea that resonated strongly with what would become environmental psychology.
The 1960s: formal establishment
The field formally emerged in the 1960s, initially under the banner of architectural psychology. Ittelson later introduced the term “environmental psychology” at a 1964 conference of the American Hospital Association. In 1970, Proshansky, Ittelson, and Rivlin published Environmental Psychology: Man and His Physical Setting, a foundational text that formally announced the field’s arrival.
Growth and the split into two strands

The rise of remote work means homes must now function as offices, classrooms, and sanctuaries simultaneously – placing unprecedented demands on residential design. Urbanization continues to accelerate globally, pushing more people into high-density housing where issues of crowding, noise, and lack of green space take a measurable toll on mental health.
Meanwhile, awareness of mental health is at an all-time high. People are actively seeking environments that reduce stress and support well-being. Environmental psychology provides the evidence-based framework for meeting those needs – not through guesswork, but through decades of research on how physical spaces actually affect the human mind.
The bigger picture: homes as psychological environments
Environmental psychology asks us to see our homes differently. A home is not just shelter or a collection of rooms. It is a psychological environment – a space that constantly communicates with its inhabitants, shaping their moods, behaviors, relationships, and sense of self. The layout communicates whether social interaction or privacy is prioritized. The lighting signals whether it’s time to be alert or relax. The presence or absence of natural elements tells the nervous system whether it can let its guard down.
