The spaces we move through every day – streets, parks, offices, housing complexes – are not neutral backdrops. They actively shape how we feel, who we interact with, and how productive or happy we become. Social design is a practice rooted in environmental psychology that focuses on creating environments specifically intended to support human welfare, foster social connections, and enhance quality of life. It goes beyond aesthetics or engineering efficiency. Social design asks a deeper question: what kind of human experience does this space create?

What is social design?
Social design, as a concept in environmental psychology, was formally developed by Robert Sommer, a pioneering environmental psychologist at the University of California, Davis. In his 1983 book Social Design: Creating Buildings with People in Mind, Sommer outlined an approach to architectural and urban design that centers the needs and experiences of the people who actually use a space – rather than prioritizing the vision of architects or the financial interests of developers alone.
The core idea is straightforward: design with people, not just for them. Social design involves engaging the actual users of a building or space in the planning and management process. It also means educating people to use their environment wisely and creatively, aiming for a balance between the social, physical, and natural dimensions of any setting. As described in The Canadian Handbook for Careers in Psychological Science, social design emphasizes building users as active agents in the design process – not passive recipients of whatever an architect or planner decides.
This matters because architects and the people who use buildings often perceive spaces very differently. A designer may see an elegant open-plan office, while the employees working in it may experience constant noise and a complete lack of privacy. A school board may approve a classroom layout without ever consulting the teachers or students who spend their days in it. Social design exists to close this gap.
Key goals of social design
Environmental psychologist Robert Gifford has outlined six goals that social designers typically pursue. Understanding these goals helps clarify what social design looks like in practice.
Habitability and goodness of fit
The first and most fundamental goal is matching a physical setting to the needs of its occupants. This is sometimes called habitability, congruence, or goodness of fit. A hospital waiting room should reduce anxiety, not amplify it. A school cafeteria should encourage social interaction, not create chaotic noise. When a space fits the needs of the people using it, well-being improves almost automatically.
User satisfaction
Social design aims to ensure that occupants are satisfied with their environment. People spend the majority of their waking hours in buildings – offices, homes, schools, hospitals. If those spaces are uncomfortable, poorly lit, too loud, or socially isolating, occupant satisfaction plummets. And dissatisfaction with one’s environment has documented effects on productivity, mood, and even physical health.
Behavior change
A well-designed space can actively shift behavior. This might mean increasing productivity among office workers, encouraging pro-social behavior among residents of a care facility, or promoting physical activity in a neighbourhood. The physical environment acts as what researchers call an “architecture of choice,” subtly influencing the decisions people make every day. A 2025 study published in Frontiers in Psychology confirmed that urban environments are active agents in shaping human behavior – not neutral containers for human activity.
Social support and community building
Social design also aims to create spaces that facilitate meaningful social contact. This includes everything from the placement of benches in a park to the layout of a residential neighbourhood. Spaces that encourage casual interaction – bumping into a neighbor while walking to the mailbox, chatting with a colleague in a well-designed break room – build the social fabric of a community over time.
Control and personal agency
People feel better in environments where they have some degree of control. This could mean being able to adjust the lighting in your workspace, having access to both public and private areas in a residential complex, or being able to choose between a quiet bench and a bustling plaza in a city park. Social design accounts for the human need to regulate the level of social interaction and stimulation.
Accessibility and inclusion
A socially designed environment must be accessible to everyone, regardless of age, ability, or socioeconomic background. This includes practical features such as ramps, wide doorways, and clear signage, but it also extends to ensuring that public spaces are welcoming to diverse cultural and social groups. A park that only accommodates young, athletic people fails the test of social design.
Assumptions behind social design
Social design operates on several key assumptions about human behavior and spatial experience. First, it assumes that people have identifiable goals and needs that can be studied, understood, and addressed through design. A hospital patient needs calm and privacy; a student needs stimulation and collaboration space; a city resident needs access to nature and community.
Second, social design assumes that designers bear a responsibility to consider these needs proactively. It is not enough to build a beautiful structure. The question is always: beautiful for whom? Functional for whom? Sommer’s foundational insight was that the people who commission a building and the people who design it are rarely the same people who have to live or work in it every day.
Third, social design assumes that strategic thinking about social outcomes should guide the design process from the very beginning – not be treated as an afterthought. When user needs are incorporated only after construction is complete, it is often too late or too expensive to make meaningful changes.
Social design and urban planning
While Sommer initially focused on buildings – hospitals, classrooms, offices – the principles of social design translate powerfully to the scale of entire cities and neighbourhoods. Urban planning that incorporates social design thinking produces spaces that are not just functional, but genuinely supportive of human well-being.
Designing for social interaction
One of the most important contributions of social design to urban planning is its emphasis on spaces that encourage people to interact. Research in environmental psychology consistently shows that the layout of a city influences how its residents connect with one another. Pedestrian-friendly streets, neighborhood parks with seating areas, public squares, and mixed-use developments all create opportunities for the informal social contact that builds community.
Sommer’s earlier work with psychiatrist Humphry Osmond introduced two useful terms here: sociopetal spaces, which draw people together, and sociofugal spaces, which push people apart. A circular seating arrangement in a hospital dayroom is sociopetal – it encourages conversation. A row of chairs facing a wall is sociofugal – it discourages it. In urban planning, a lively street with cafรฉs, shops, and wide sidewalks is sociopetal. A highway cutting through a neighborhood is sociofugal.
Safety through natural surveillance
Social design also informs how cities can be made safer. Jane Jacobs, in her landmark 1961 book The Death and Life of Great American Cities, introduced the concept of “eyes on the street” – the idea that a well-used street is a safe street. When buildings are oriented toward the sidewalk, when ground-floor shops have windows facing the street, and when pedestrians are present throughout the day, natural surveillance occurs organically. People watch over their surroundings simply by being present and engaged.
This principle has been extensively validated. A 2025 study in Quito, Ecuador found that urban areas with higher population density and a mix of commercial and residential uses – features that promote more “eyes on the street” – showed lower rates of street robberies. Conversely, areas with large vacant blocks, poor street lighting, and limited pedestrian access experienced higher crime. The design of the space itself was a significant factor in safety outcomes.
This concept later evolved into what is now known as Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), a formal framework developed by C. Ray Jeffery in the 1970s that applies many of these same principles to reduce criminal opportunity through spatial planning.
Green spaces and psychological well-being
Social design in urban planning also includes the strategic incorporation of green spaces. Parks, community gardens, tree-lined streets, and green rooftops are not just environmentally beneficial – they serve critical social and psychological functions. Research consistently links access to nature with reduced stress, improved mood, and better cognitive functioning. Green spaces also serve as gathering points where neighbors meet, children play, and community bonds form.
Environmental sustainability and social design are not competing goals – they are complementary. When communities engage with nature through shared green spaces, residents tend to develop stronger environmental awareness and a deeper sense of responsibility toward their surroundings.
Walkability and pedestrian-oriented design
Urban environments designed with pedestrians in mind – featuring wide sidewalks, safe crossings, accessible public transit, and human-scaled streetscapes – promote both physical health and social interaction. Research cited in a systematic review in PMC recommends prioritizing pedestrian-oriented layouts as a key strategy for creating human-centered urban environments. When people walk through their neighbourhoods rather than drive, they encounter neighbors, notice their surroundings, and engage with local businesses. Walkable streets produce the kind of casual, repeated social contact that social design aims to facilitate.
Participatory design: putting social design into practice
One of the most practical expressions of social design is participatory design (also called participatory planning). This approach directly involves the future users of a space – residents, employees, patients, students – in the planning and decision-making process.
Sommer often used the terms “social design” and “participatory planning” interchangeably. The logic is clear: if the goal is to create environments that serve people’s actual needs, those people should have a voice in the process. Participatory design works best at the local level, where residents have intimate knowledge of how a space is used, what problems exist, and what improvements would make a real difference.
In practice, participatory design can involve community workshops, surveys, focus groups, public consultations, or even collaborative design sessions where residents work alongside architects and planners. The key principle is that the people who will live with the results of a design decision should help shape that decision.
This is not just an ethical preference – it produces better outcomes. When people feel ownership over their environment, they are more likely to maintain it, use it well, and report higher satisfaction. Spaces designed without user input, by contrast, often require costly retrofitting or simply fail to serve their intended purpose.
Social design vs. traditional design approaches
To appreciate the significance of social design, it helps to understand what it replaced. Traditional architectural and urban planning approaches tended to prioritize functionality, aesthetics, and cost efficiency – often without adequately accounting for the lived experiences of the people who would occupy the space. Sommer’s early work in a mental hospital in Saskatchewan, Canada, vividly illustrated the problem. The hospital’s design was so poor for patient well-being that Sommer and his colleague Humphry Osmond concluded the building itself was harming the people it was supposed to help.
The modernist planning movement of the mid-20th century, championed by figures like Le Corbusier, favoured separating land uses (residential here, commercial there, industrial elsewhere) and building large-scale housing projects surrounded by open space. Jane Jacobs famously argued that this approach produced sterile, unsafe environments by eliminating the street-level diversity and human-scale interaction that make cities livable.
Social design offers an alternative: rather than imposing a top-down vision, it starts from the ground up with the needs, behaviors, and preferences of real people. The designer becomes a facilitator, not a dictator.
Real-world applications of social design
Social design principles appear across many types of environments. In workplaces, social design informs decisions about open vs. private workspaces, natural lighting, noise management, and the placement of communal areas. In healthcare settings, it guides the creation of patient rooms that promote recovery, waiting areas that reduce anxiety, and staff spaces that support well-being. In educational environments, it shapes classroom layouts, common areas, and campus design to support both learning and social development.
At the urban scale, social design principles are evident in mixed-use developments that combine housing, retail, and public spaces; in transit-oriented developments that reduce car dependency; and in neighbourhood revitalization projects that prioritize community input. The Centre for Urban Design and Mental Health at the University of Waterloo has used immersive simulations to study how street-level design features – building facades, layout complexity, spatial legibility – influence pedestrian stress, arousal, and pleasure. Their research demonstrates that even small design details can have measurable psychological effects.
Why social design matters now
With over two-thirds of the world’s population projected to live in cities by 2050, the stakes for getting urban design right have never been higher. Poorly designed environments contribute to social isolation, stress, mental health problems, and reduced community cohesion. Social design offers a research-backed framework for addressing these challenges.
The field has also expanded beyond Sommer’s original focus. Today, social design intersects with sustainability, public health, equity, and technology. Smart city technologies, biophilic design principles, and evidence-based design practices all draw on the foundational ideas of social design: that environments should be planned around human needs, that users should be involved in the process, and that the ultimate measure of a space is whether it supports the well-being of the people who use it.
