Humans breathe air filtered by forests, drink water cycled through ecosystems, and eat food grown in soil teeming with microbial life. Yet, most people go about their day barely noticing this dependence. The relationship between humans and nature is not a philosophical luxury – it is a biological fact. For the vast majority of our evolutionary history, humans lived in nature, not apart from it. Understanding this intrinsic connection is central to environmental psychology, and it has enormous implications for our health, our well-being, and the future of the planet.

Humans are part of nature, not separate from it

One of the most persistent – and damaging – ideas in modern thought is that humans exist outside of or above the natural world. This belief has roots in centuries of philosophical thinking, particularly the Cartesian dualism that positioned the human mind as fundamentally separate from the physical world. Over time, industrialisation and urbanisation reinforced this divide, turning nature into something to be visited rather than lived within.

But biology tells a different story. Every cell in our body depends on oxygen produced by photosynthetic organisms. Our immune systems are shaped by exposure to the microbial diversity found in soil and water. Our circadian rhythms – the internal clocks that regulate sleep, mood, and metabolism – are calibrated to natural cycles of sunlight and darkness. In short, human physiology is built for integration with natural systems, not separation from them.

This understanding has been formalised in what biologist Edward O. Wilson called the biophilia hypothesis. Wilson proposed that humans possess an innate, biologically rooted tendency to seek connections with nature and other living things. This isn’t merely a preference – it’s a product of millions of years of co-evolution with the natural environment. Our ancestors who understood landscapes, water sources, and plant life had better chances of survival, and those tendencies, Wilson argued, became embedded in our genetic makeup.

Earlier, psychoanalyst Erich Fromm had used the term biophilia to describe what he called a productive love of life and all that is alive, contrasting it with necrophilia – the attraction to what is dead or decaying. While Fromm’s concept was more philosophical, Wilson grounded it in evolutionary biology. Together, these perspectives highlight something important: our bond with nature operates on both a deep psychological level and a fundamental biological one.

The growing disconnection from nature

Despite this deep-rooted connection, modern life has steadily pulled humans away from nature. The average person now spends approximately 95 percent of their time indoors – in homes, offices, cars, and shopping centres. Screens have replaced green spaces as the primary environment for both work and leisure. Children, who once spent hours climbing trees and exploring streams, now spend up to eight hours a day in front of electronic devices.

In 2005, journalist and author Richard Louv coined the term nature-deficit disorder to describe the human costs of this alienation. It’s not a formal clinical diagnosis, but rather a way to talk about a pattern that researchers were noticing: as people, especially children, spent less time outdoors, rates of obesity, attention difficulties, anxiety, and depression appeared to rise in parallel. Louv described it as a loss of our sense of rootedness in place and our connection to the living world around us.

Research has supported this concern. A study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology found that nature deficit among adolescents was associated with higher levels of anxiety and depression, and that reduced contact with natural environments weakened social coping resources and resilience. The separation between humans and nature, multiple researchers now argue, is not just an environmental issue – it is a public health issue.

Why do we overlook this connection?

Several factors contribute to this blindness. First, urbanisation has made nature invisible in daily life. When food comes from supermarket shelves, water from taps, and electricity from wall sockets, it becomes easy to forget that all of these originate in natural systems. Second, technology provides constant stimulation that competes with – and often wins against – the quieter appeal of the outdoors. Third, cultural narratives often frame nature as a resource to exploit rather than a system to which we belong. This mindset has contributed directly to environmental degradation, from deforestation and pollution to climate change.

The irony is sharp: the more we distance ourselves from nature, the more we damage the ecosystems we depend on, and the worse our own health becomes in the process.

How nature benefits psychological well-being

The evidence linking nature exposure to mental health improvements is now substantial. According to a report by the Mental Health Foundation, people who feel more connected with nature are generally happier, more likely to feel their lives are worthwhile, and report lower levels of depression and anxiety. Nature generates positive emotions such as calmness, joy, and creativity, and it also supports concentration.

The Canadian Psychological Association outlines several specific mental health benefits supported by environmental psychology research:

Attention restoration: Our ability to focus is a finite resource that becomes depleted throughout the day. Nature exposure has been shown to replenish this capacity. Studies have even found that it can reduce symptoms of ADHD in children.

Mood improvement: Time in natural settings consistently leads to improved mood and reduced feelings of sadness. Evidence indicates that nature exposure can help alleviate symptoms of depression.

Stress reduction: Nature lowers physiological markers of stress, including heart rate and cortisol levels. Research suggests that just 20 minutes in a natural setting is sufficient to measurably reduce stress hormones.

Social cohesion: Contact with nature tends to increase generosity, cooperation, and feelings of social connection – all of which are protective factors for mental health.

Self-regulation: People who spend time in nature report feeling calmer and better able to manage impulses and emotional reactions.

The 120-minute threshold

One of the most influential recent studies, led by Mathew White at the University of Exeter, analysed data from 20,000 participants and found a clear threshold for nature’s benefits. People who spent at least two hours per week in green spaces – whether in a single visit or spread across the week – were significantly more likely to report good health and psychological well-being than those who did not reach that threshold. This finding held true across different ages, occupations, ethnic groups, income levels, and even among people with chronic illnesses or disabilities.

Physical health benefits of connecting with nature

The benefits of nature exposure extend well beyond the psychological. A scoping review published in the Journal of Global Health examined 39 studies and found that engagement with natural outdoor environments led to improvements across mental health outcomes in 98% of studies, physical health outcomes in 83%, and cognitive health outcomes in 75%.

Some of the key physical health effects documented by research include:

Lower blood pressure and cardiovascular improvements: Exposure to green environments is associated with reduced blood pressure and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Walking in natural settings has measurable advantages over walking in urban ones for heart health.

Stronger immune function: Japanese research on shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) has shown that spending time in forests elevates levels of Natural Killer cells in the immune system – cells that play a crucial role in fighting infections and tumours.

Faster healing: In a well-known study by researcher Robert Ulrich, hospital patients recovering from surgery who had a view of trees from their window tolerated pain better, required less medication, and were discharged sooner than patients whose window faced a brick wall.

Better sleep: Outdoor exposure helps regulate circadian rhythms. Physical activity combined with natural light supports healthier sleep patterns and deeper rest.

Spiritual and emotional fulfilment through nature

Beyond measurable health outcomes, nature fulfils a dimension of human experience that is harder to quantify but no less real. Many people describe their most meaningful moments as occurring in natural settings – a sunrise over mountains, the sound of waves, the silence of a forest. These experiences often evoke awe, gratitude, and a sense of being part of something larger than oneself.

Environmental psychologists refer to this as nature connectedness – the degree to which a person identifies with and feels emotionally attached to the natural world. This connectedness is not just a nice feeling; it is a predictor of both well-being and pro-environmental behaviour. Research conducted by Stephen Kellert, who worked closely with Wilson, argued that the human need for nature extends far beyond material survival to encompass aesthetic, intellectual, cognitive, and spiritual meaning.

This dimension is also culturally universal. Across human civilisations, from Indigenous traditions to major world religions, nature has served as a source of spiritual practice, moral teaching, and emotional renewal. The feeling of standing in a grove of ancient trees and sensing something sacred is not a modern invention – it is one of the oldest human experiences.

Rediscovering love for nature as a path to protection

Here’s a simple but powerful idea from environmental psychology: people protect what they love. If we want to reverse environmental degradation – the destruction of forests, the pollution of waterways, the collapse of biodiversity – the starting point may not be policy or technology, but emotional reconnection.

The Mental Health Foundation’s research emphasises that people with strong nature connectedness are more likely to engage in pro-environmental behaviours such as recycling, buying seasonal food, and supporting conservation. This creates a positive feedback loop: caring for nature improves natural spaces, which in turn provide greater well-being benefits to people.

The growing body of evidence – now approaching 1,000 published studies – has already started influencing public policy. Cities are designing parks with mental health in mind. Healthcare providers in some countries now prescribe time in nature as part of treatment plans. Organisations like Park Rx America connect physicians with a database of parks they can formally prescribe to patients. Schools are incorporating outdoor learning, and biophilic design – architecture that integrates natural elements like light, plants, and water – is becoming a standard in urban planning.

Small steps toward reconnection

Reconnection with nature does not require a wilderness expedition. Research shows that even modest forms of engagement make a difference. Noticing birdsong on the way to work, keeping indoor plants, sitting in a park for 20 minutes, or simply opening a window to let in natural light – all of these count. The key, according to researchers, is not just being in nature, but actually attending to it – noticing, appreciating, and engaging with it through the senses.

As the Canadian Psychological Association suggests, just a few minutes of nature exposure each day can boost attention, reduce stress, and lift mood. Even viewing nature documentaries has measurable mental health benefits, making some degree of nature connectedness available to nearly everyone regardless of mobility or location.

The cost of continued disconnection

The stakes of ignoring our relationship with nature are high – for individuals and for the planet. On the individual level, continued disconnection contributes to rising rates of stress, depression, obesity, and attention disorders. On the collective level, people who feel separated from nature are less likely to act in its defence. This cycle – disconnection leading to degradation, degradation leading to fewer opportunities for connection – is one of the most dangerous feedback loops of our time.

Environmental psychology makes the case clearly: humans are not external observers of nature. We are participants in it. Our nervous systems, our emotions, and our physical health are calibrated to function within natural environments. When we lose that contact, something fundamental goes missing – not just from the landscape, but from our own inner lives.

Reversing this trend is not only possible, it may be one of the most impactful things we can do for both human well-being and ecological sustainability. The first step is remembering what we’ve always known but tend to forget: we are nature.
