Children are born explorers. From the moment a toddler reaches for a leaf or squeals at the sight of a squirrel, there’s a visible pull toward the living world. This connection isn’t random – it’s deeply wired into human development. Yet, over the past few decades, children’s access to nature has been steadily shrinking, replaced by screens, structured activities, and sterile indoor environments. The consequences of this shift ripple through physical health, emotional well-being, cognitive growth, and even how future generations will relate to the planet. Understanding children’s relationship to nature isn’t just a feel-good topic – it’s a critical area of environmental psychology with far-reaching implications.

The biophilia hypothesis: why children are drawn to nature
The idea that humans have an innate attraction to the natural world has a name: biophilia. Coined by psychoanalyst Erich Fromm and later popularized by biologist Edward O. Wilson in his 1984 book Biophilia, the term describes a genetically rooted tendency in humans to seek connections with other living organisms. Wilson argued that because our species evolved in intimate contact with the natural environment over millions of years, this affinity became embedded in our biology.
For children, this pull is especially strong. Research has documented evidence of biophilic tendencies in children younger than two years old. Young children don’t experience nature the way adults do – as background scenery or an aesthetic view. Instead, they experience it holistically, through touch, smell, sound, and taste. They are interested in what nature allows them to do: dig in dirt, splash in puddles, chase bugs, and climb rocks. Their relationship with nature is active and sensory, not passive and visual.
This distinction matters because it tells us something important about how children develop. According to developmental psychologist Jean Piaget’s framework, childhood cognitive development unfolds through progressive stages shaped by continuing experiences with the environment. The ages of roughly 3 to 6 – and to a lesser extent 7 to 12 – represent a critical window during which specific cognitive and developmental skills form. Contact with natural settings during these years promotes creativity, imagination, intellectual growth, and stronger social relationships.
A historical shift: from outdoor play to gray playgrounds
Children’s play environments have changed dramatically over the past century, and not for the better. Much of this can be traced back to an old and largely discredited idea. In the 19th century, psychologist Herbert Spencer proposed the “surplus energy theory,” arguing that children play primarily to burn off excess energy. Although developmental researchers have long rejected this view, it left a lasting mark on playground design. Playgrounds came to be seen as spaces for physical exertion during recess – places to “let off steam” – rather than environments that support learning, creativity, or connection with the living world.
The result? Most playgrounds today feature manufactured climbing equipment set on rubber surfacing or concrete, with little or no vegetation in sight. Researchers Robin Moore and Herb Wong described these environments as “not green, but gray,” and educator Gever Tulley has compared some to parking lots. The design philosophy behind many childcare and school playgrounds has prioritized adult convenience – easy surveillance, low maintenance, and liability reduction – over what actually stimulates children’s development.
Developmental psychologist Roger Hart has pointed out that this problem stems from a broader undervaluation of play itself. When play is seen as discretionary rather than essential, the spaces we create for it reflect that attitude. The consequence is outdoor environments that offer children almost no opportunity to interact with plants, animals, water, soil, or the dynamic, unpredictable elements that define real nature.
The decline of outdoor time and the rise of “nature-deficit disorder”
It’s not just that play spaces have changed – the amount of time children spend outdoors has plummeted. Research by Hofferth and Sandberg (2000) found that between 1981 and 1997, outdoor play time for American children aged 6 to 8 dropped by about 25%, falling from 15 hours a week to roughly 11 hours. Over the same period, time spent in school increased by nearly 5 hours per week. A later study found that while 70% of mothers recalled playing outdoors every day as children, only 31% of their own children did the same.
Author and journalist Richard Louv gave this growing disconnection a name in his 2005 book Last Child in the Woods: nature-deficit disorder. This isn’t a clinical diagnosis – Louv created it as a way to describe the human costs of alienation from nature. Those costs, as he outlined them, include reduced use of the senses, attention difficulties, higher rates of obesity, increased emotional illness, and a weakening of ecological awareness.
The causes are multiple. Parents increasingly keep children indoors out of fears about safety. Electronic media – from television to smartphones – competes relentlessly for children’s attention. Structured and programmed activities fill up more and more of children’s free time. And in many communities, natural spaces have simply been paved over or made off-limits. The combined effect is a generation of children growing up with significantly less contact with the living world than any previous generation in human history.
What children lose when they lose nature
The research on what nature provides to children is substantial and growing. Environmental psychological theory suggests that contact with nature supports children’s creativity and imagination, strengthens cognitive functioning, and enhances social relationships. But the benefits go further than general well-being.
Attention and focus
Studies have found that children showing symptoms of ADHD concentrate better after spending time in natural settings. Even brief exposure to greenery – a view from a window, a walk through a park – can measurably improve a child’s ability to focus. This is consistent with Attention Restoration Theory, which proposes that natural environments allow the brain’s directed attention to recover from fatigue.
Stress reduction
Nature acts as a buffer against the negative effects of stress in children’s lives. A landmark study by Wells and Evans (2003) found that children living in settings with more nearby nature showed lower levels of psychological distress, even when facing significant life stressors. The “natural buffering hypothesis” suggests that regular access to green spaces helps children cope more effectively with adversity.
Physical health
The connection between indoor lifestyles and rising childhood obesity is well-documented. Children who play outdoors in natural settings engage in more vigorous physical activity than those on conventional playgrounds. There are also links between reduced time outdoors and increasing rates of myopia and vitamin D deficiency in children.
Emotional development and self-esteem
Outdoor challenge programs and unstructured play in natural environments have been shown to strengthen children’s sense of self, independence, and confidence. Research published in Frontiers in Psychology demonstrated that children who feel more connected to nature tend to engage in more sustainable behaviors – and that this, in turn, is linked to greater happiness.
From biophilia to biophobia: when the bond breaks
One of the most concerning findings in this field is that children’s natural attraction to the living world can actually reverse if it isn’t nurtured. If young children don’t receive regular, positive opportunities to interact with nature during their formative years, they may develop what researchers call biophobia – an aversion to the natural world. This can range from mild discomfort outdoors to active contempt for anything that isn’t man-made, managed, or climate-controlled.
Environmental educator David Sobel has warned against well-meaning but misguided environmental education that introduces children too early to abstract ecological crises – rainforest destruction, species extinction, ocean acidification – before they’ve had a chance to develop a personal, emotional bond with local nature. When children are asked to confront global problems beyond their cognitive capacity and control, they can become anxious and disengaged rather than motivated. The result can be the very opposite of what educators intend: children who tune out environmental issues altogether.
The developmental sequence matters. Children’s emotional connection to nature develops before their capacity for abstract reasoning about it. Love comes before knowledge, and knowledge without love, as naturalist John Burroughs cautioned, doesn’t stick.
Naturalized play environments: designing for connection
If gray playgrounds are part of the problem, naturalized play environments are a key part of the solution. These are outdoor spaces designed to bring elements of the natural world back into children’s daily experience – indigenous plants, varied terrain, water features, sand, logs, boulders, trees for climbing, and habitats that attract insects, birds, and small animals.
The evidence in favor of these environments is compelling. Research by Fjortoft (2001) showed that when children’s daily play spaces were heavily naturalized, there was a significant increase in both their interest in and knowledge of the natural world. Sobel (2004) reviewed studies on naturalized playgrounds and found they had a positive effect on children’s development of environmental stewardship values – and that greater diversity in the landscape led to greater appreciation of nature.
Harvard psychologist Howard Gardner has noted that while classroom knowledge often remains bound to school settings, outdoor education promotes what he calls “connected knowing” – learning that becomes part of life itself rather than something separate from it. This kind of learning is exactly what naturalized environments encourage.
What makes a good naturalized play space?
Effective naturalized play environments share several features. They include indigenous vegetation – local plants that are adapted to the climate and that attract local wildlife. They incorporate varied landscapes such as hills, flat areas, wooded patches, and open meadows, which offer different types of play and exploration. They provide loose natural materials – sticks, stones, leaves, water, sand – that children can manipulate, build with, and experiment on. And they create opportunities for children to encounter and observe animals and insects in a setting that feels real rather than manufactured.
Importantly, these spaces don’t need to be wilderness. A school garden with native plants, a playground with a small creek bed and log seating, or even a corner of an urban park designed with natural elements can provide meaningful nature contact. What matters is regularity and immersion – children need access to these environments as part of their daily routine, not as a rare field trip.
Building environmental ethics from the ground up
There is a clear developmental pathway from childhood nature contact to adult environmental values. Research in environmental psychology has consistently found that positive childhood experiences in nature are among the strongest predictors of pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors in adulthood. This isn’t just about teaching children facts about ecosystems – it’s about fostering a relationship.
Environmental educator Stephen Kellert outlined three broad stages in this developmental process. During early childhood (ages 3-7), the priority should be building empathy with nature through direct, sensory-rich contact with local animals, plants, and landscapes. In middle childhood (ages 7-11), children begin exploring more widely, developing skills and knowledge about how natural systems work. During adolescence (ages 12-17), young people can begin to engage with broader ecological concepts and develop a sense of personal responsibility for environmental stewardship.
A 2024 study published in Landscape and Urban Planning reinforced this by showing that interactive behaviors with nature during childhood – such as observing natural processes and cultivating plants – are stronger predictors of nature relatedness in adulthood than simply living near green spaces. In other words, it’s not just exposure that matters, but active engagement.
The role of parents and educators
Reconnecting children with nature requires intentional effort from the adults in their lives. Rachel Carson emphasized that a child’s positive bond with nature depends on two things: special places and special people. Parents and caregivers who model comfort with, enjoyment of, and respect for the outdoors make it far more likely that children will develop these same qualities.
Research on parental influence has shown that parents’ own childhood experiences with nature significantly shape their children’s nature connectedness. This intergenerational effect means that the current generation’s disconnection could compound itself in future generations unless actively countered.
For educators, the shift involves moving beyond the classroom model of environmental learning and making regular outdoor time a core part of the curriculum – not just for recess, but for science, art, storytelling, and free exploration. Programs like forest schools and nature kindergartens, which are growing in popularity across Europe and North America, offer promising models for what this can look like in practice.
Why this matters now more than ever
The world faces environmental challenges of unprecedented scale – climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, deforestation. The generation of children growing up today will inherit these problems and will be tasked with solving them. But you cannot ask people to protect something they’ve never known. A child who has never turned over a rock to find insects, never watched a caterpillar become a butterfly, never felt rain on their face in a forest, has no experiential foundation for caring about the natural world.
Fostering children’s innate bond with nature is therefore not just a matter of individual well-being, though that alone would be reason enough. It’s an investment in the future of the planet. Every naturalized playground, every hour of outdoor free play, every garden tended by small hands, is a step toward a generation that not only understands the environment intellectually but feels a deep, personal connection to it.
