When researchers sit down to begin a literature review, one of the first – and most important – decisions they face is: where do I look? The sources you choose to consult directly shape the depth, accuracy, and credibility of your review. A well-rounded literature review doesn’t rely on a single type of source. Instead, it draws from a rich mix of scholarly journals, books, review articles, abstracts and indexes, the internet, and doctoral dissertations – each contributing something different to the overall picture. Understanding what each source offers, and when to use it, is a foundational skill for any researcher.

Scholarly journals: the backbone of academic research

For most researchers, peer-reviewed journals are the first stop – and for good reason. Scholarly literature is written by researchers who are experts in their field, submitted to journal editors, and evaluated by multiple anonymous experts in the same discipline before publication. This peer-review process acts as a quality-control mechanism, weeding out methodologically weak or poorly reasoned work before it reaches the wider academic community.

In psychology specifically, journals like Psychological Bulletin, Annual Review of Psychology, and Current Directions in Psychological Science are particularly valuable. Some journals are dedicated almost entirely to publishing full-length review articles, making them efficient resources for getting a synthesized overview of a research area. Because journals publish continuously throughout the year, they also tend to contain more current findings than books, making them the go-to source for the latest developments in a field.

What makes a journal article truly useful?

Not everything published in a peer-reviewed journal automatically qualifies as a scholarly source for research purposes. Book reviews, letters to the editor, and short editorial commentary are not peer reviewed, even when they appear in reputable journals. Researchers should specifically target original research articles, which report methodology, data, and results, and review articles, which synthesize existing findings on a topic.

Books: depth, context, and theoretical grounding

Academic books serve a different but complementary purpose in a literature review. While journals excel at presenting narrow, cutting-edge findings, books provide breadth and conceptual depth. Scholarly books contain authoritative information, including comprehensive accounts of research, historical data, overviews, and expert perspectives on themes. They are especially helpful when a researcher needs to understand the theoretical foundations of a subject, trace how a concept evolved over decades, or gain background context before diving into primary research articles.

The key limitation of books is timeliness. Because writing and publishing a book can take years, they are not always the best source for rapidly evolving topics. Researchers should use books to establish theoretical and historical grounding, then turn to journals for the most recent empirical evidence. It’s also worth noting that, unlike journal articles, books do not go through the same blind evaluation and peer-review process as journal articles, though many academic books are still subject to rigorous editorial review.

Review articles: saving time without sacrificing depth

A review article is not a primary research report – it is a carefully synthesized overview of what has already been published on a topic. A literature review is a critical summary of what the scientific literature says about a specific topic or question – combining summary and synthesis, identifying patterns, and sometimes tracing the intellectual progression of a research area. For a researcher just entering a new field, review articles are enormously useful because they compress years of scattered findings into a single, organized narrative.

Review articles also function as a gateway to further sources: the reference lists of recent articles and reviews can lead to valuable papers, including foundational or “seminal” works that have shaped the direction of a field. Following citations backward and forward through the literature – a technique sometimes called citation chaining – is one of the most efficient ways to build a comprehensive source list.

Abstracts and indexes: navigating the research landscape

Before accessing a full article or book, researchers almost always encounter an abstract – a brief, structured summary of a study’s purpose, methods, findings, and conclusions. Abstracts allow researchers to quickly assess the relevance of a source before committing time to reading the full text. Indexes, on the other hand, are searchable databases that organize and catalogue large bodies of scholarly literature, making it possible to locate specific studies efficiently.

In psychology, the most authoritative indexing tool is APA’s PsycINFO, which contains nearly 2.3 million citations and abstracts of journal articles, book chapters, books, and dissertations – making it the largest resource devoted to peer-reviewed literature in behavioral science and mental health. Beyond PsycINFO, other major indexes include PubMed (for biomedical and clinical psychology literature), Scopus (which indexes over 47 million scholarly records across disciplines), and Web of Science (covering journal articles, patents, and conference proceedings with robust citation-tracking tools). Each index has a slightly different coverage scope, which is why using more than one is recommended for a thorough review.

Using advanced search features effectively

Most databases allow researchers to filter results by publication type – for instance, limiting results specifically to literature reviews or empirical studies. In PsycINFO’s advanced search, selecting “literature review” or “systematic review” as the methodology alongside relevant keywords can dramatically refine results and surface high-quality, pre-synthesized work on a topic. Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) and truncation techniques further allow researchers to broaden or narrow searches strategically.

The internet: a vast but uneven resource

The internet has transformed how researchers access information, providing immediate access to a staggering volume of material. Tools like Google Scholar are widely used starting points – Google Scholar is worth searching, but bear in mind its limitations: it searches broadly and will also retrieve non-peer-reviewed material. This means researchers must apply careful evaluation criteria when using web-based sources.

Government and institutional websites can also be excellent sources. Gray literature – including white papers, policy briefs, and government reports – can still be valuable for research as long as it meets key quality criteria: currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose. Open-access repositories like institutional research databases and preprint servers have also grown significantly, giving researchers access to cutting-edge work even before formal publication. The critical rule when using internet sources is source evaluation – always prioritize institutional, governmental, or peer-reviewed material over blogs, opinion sites, or unverified content.

Doctoral dissertations: untapped reservoirs of original research

Doctoral dissertations are among the most underutilized sources in literature reviews – yet they offer something that published journal articles often cannot: exhaustive methodological detail. Because dissertations are written to satisfy rigorous academic degree requirements, they typically contain extensive literature reviews, full descriptions of methodology, and detailed reporting of results. Including dissertations in a literature review allows researchers to capture unpublished scholarship and access more diverse perspectives on a topic.

A published study from PubMed Central found that doctoral dissertations merit inclusion in comprehensive literature reviews because they are easy to identify in bibliographic databases, are not subject to publication bias, and feature thorough reporting. This is particularly important in fields like psychology where certain findings that fail to reach statistical significance may never make it into published journals – meaning the full picture of a research area can only emerge by including dissertations.

Where to find dissertations

The primary resource for locating dissertations is ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global, which indexes doctoral dissertations and master’s theses from 1861 to the present, with abstracts available for works from 1980 onward and full-text access for most dissertations from the 1990s onwards. For open-access options, the Open Access Theses and Dissertations (OATD) database currently indexes over 7.4 million theses and dissertations from more than 1,100 institutions worldwide, providing freely available research that would otherwise be difficult to discover.

Why using a variety of sources matters

Each source type described above has its own strengths and blind spots. Journals provide up-to-date, peer-reviewed findings but may reflect publication bias – the tendency for significant or positive results to be published more readily than null findings. Books offer depth and historical perspective but can go out of date. Review articles save time but are only as comprehensive as the sources they themselves drew from. The internet is vast but unfiltered. Dissertations are thorough but can be difficult to access and assess for quality.

A literature review that draws on only one or two of these source types will almost certainly miss important work. For most research, using multiple source types – including annotated bibliographies, journal articles, books, conference papers, datasets, dissertations, government reports, and systematic reviews – creates the most comprehensive picture of what is known about a topic. The goal is not to collect every available source, but to use a strategic combination that covers the field accurately, critically, and completely.

It’s also worth remembering that sources don’t stand alone – they talk to each other. A dissertation may cite a pivotal journal article; a review article may reference a foundational book; a database index may surface a dissertation that challenges an otherwise-accepted consensus. Following these connections across different source types is what transforms a basic reference list into a genuinely insightful review of literature.
