Not all psychological tests are created equal. A clinician assessing a child’s learning difficulties uses very different tools than a researcher studying personality across cultures, or a recruiter screening hundreds of job applicants at once. The sheer variety of psychological tests can seem overwhelming at first – but once you understand how they are classified, the logic behind each type becomes remarkably clear. Psychological tests are broadly categorized based on several criteria: how they are administered, what kind of content or items they contain, and how responses are scored. Each classification tells us something important about what a test can and cannot do.

Classification by mode of administration

One of the most fundamental ways to classify psychological tests is by how they are delivered – to one person at a time, or to many people simultaneously.

Individual tests

Individual tests are administered to a single person at a time, with direct interaction between the examiner and the test-taker. According to the National Institutes of Health, an individually administered measure is typically provided by a psychologist, physician, or trained technician who can observe and respond to the test-taker throughout the process. This one-on-one format allows examiners to observe non-verbal cues, ask follow-up questions, and tailor the assessment to the individual’s specific needs. It also makes individual tests especially suitable for clinical evaluations, diagnostic work with children, and assessments of people with complex needs.

Classic examples include the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) and the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale. The Stanford-Binet, originally developed by Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon in 1905, was among the earliest individual tests to systematically measure intellectual ability across age groups. While highly valuable, individual tests are more time-intensive and costly to administer, which limits their use in large-scale settings.

Group tests

Group tests are designed to be administered to multiple individuals simultaneously, following the same set of instructions. Their origins lie in practical necessity: during World War I, the United States Army needed to quickly evaluate thousands of recruits, which led to the development of the Army Alpha (verbal) and Army Beta (non-verbal) group intelligence tests. This historical milestone demonstrated that group tests could be reliable tools for mass assessment.

Today, group tests are widely used in educational settings, employment screening, and large-scale research. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a well-known example, assessing academic aptitude across large populations simultaneously. While group tests are more practical and cost-effective, they sacrifice the depth of individual observation that one-on-one testing provides.

Classification by the nature of test items

Beyond how a test is administered, psychologists also classify tests based on the type of content or items used – particularly whether they rely on language.

Verbal tests

Verbal tests require the test-taker to use language to respond – through reading, writing, or spoken answers. These tests assess abilities such as vocabulary, reading comprehension, and verbal reasoning. As the NIH’s overview of psychological testing explains, verbal tests use language both to pose questions and to demonstrate answers. They are most commonly used in intelligence and cognitive ability assessments – for instance, the verbal comprehension component of the WAIS measures how well a person understands and uses language to reason and solve problems.

Verbal tests are effective for literate populations with reasonable proficiency in the test language, but they can disadvantage individuals with language barriers, hearing impairments, or limited literacy.

Non-verbal tests

Non-verbal tests – also called performance tests – minimize or eliminate the use of language entirely. Instead, they use symbols, diagrams, geometric patterns, or concrete objects as test stimuli. According to ScienceDirect, some of the most widely used non-verbal tests measure reasoning using pictures, geometrical forms, or symbols, with examiners demonstrating instructions through gestures and pointing rather than verbal explanation.

The most well-known example is Raven’s Progressive Matrices, developed by John C. Raven in 1936. It presents a series of visual patterns with one piece missing, and the test-taker must identify the correct piece from a set of options. Because it requires no language, it is especially valuable in cross-cultural research, assessments of individuals with language impairments, and evaluating children who have not yet developed reading and writing skills. Classification by scoring method: objective vs. subjective tests

Another important dimension of classification concerns how a test’s responses are scored. This distinction broadly separates tests into objective and subjective categories, each with distinct strengths and trade-offs.

Objective tests

Objective tests use structured, standardized questions with clearly defined correct answers – such as multiple-choice, true/false, or rating scale formats. As the NOBA Psychology series clarifies, what makes a test “objective” is the scoring method: the psychologist administering it does not need to rely on judgment or interpretation to classify the test-taker’s response, since the intended answer is specified by a pre-existing scoring key. This makes objective tests highly reliable – two different examiners scoring the same test will reach the same result.

Common examples include the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2), which provides scores across ten clinical scales based on standardized responses, and IQ tests like the WAIS and Stanford-Binet, which yield numerical scores that can be compared across large populations. Objective tests are efficient, consistent, and widely trusted – but critics note they may not capture the full complexity of a person’s inner psychological world.

Subjective and projective tests

Subjective tests rely on the examiner’s interpretation of the test-taker’s responses, making the scoring process inherently less standardized. A common example is a clinical interview, where the quality of insight gathered depends heavily on the skill and perspective of the interviewer.

A specialized subset of subjective testing is projective tests, which are designed to uncover unconscious thoughts, desires, and conflicts. These tests present ambiguous stimuli – an inkblot, a vague image, an incomplete sentence – and ask the test-taker to respond freely. The premise is that people project aspects of their inner world onto these neutral stimuli. As Study.com’s overview explains, projective tests aim to uncover subconscious emotions and attitudes that the test-taker may not consciously recognize or report.

The most famous projective test is the Rorschach Inkblot Test, in which subjects describe what they see in a series of inkblot cards. Another widely used tool is the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), where subjects construct stories based on ambiguous pictures. While projective tests can yield rich, nuanced insights into personality, research consistently finds that they score lower on reliability and standardization than objective tests, since two clinicians may interpret the same response quite differently.

Classification by rate of performance: speed vs. power tests

Tests can also be distinguished by whether they measure how fast a person can respond, or how deeply they can reason – regardless of time.

Speed tests present relatively straightforward items within a strict time limit. The goal is to measure how many items a person can correctly complete in the allotted time. These tests are particularly useful for assessing roles that demand quick, efficient responses. Power tests, by contrast, present items in increasing order of difficulty without a rigid time constraint. According to the NIH, a true power test gives all test-takers enough time to do their best – the only question is what level of difficulty they can handle. In practice, most real-world tests blend both elements, combining time constraints with items of varying complexity.

Classification by medium: paper-pencil vs. performance tests

Tests are further classified by the medium through which they are delivered. Paper-and-pencil tests are the most traditional form, requiring individuals to respond to written questions using pen or paper (or, increasingly, a keyboard). They are cost-effective, easy to administer at scale, and capable of assessing a wide range of abilities from cognitive skills to personality traits.

Performance tests, on the other hand, require individuals to physically carry out tasks – assembling objects, tracing mazes, arranging pictures in a logical sequence, or demonstrating a practical skill. As the NIH notes, performance tests can involve manipulating objects, placing pictures in order, and finishing patterns. They are particularly valuable for assessing individuals with motor disabilities or communication challenges, and for evaluating practical, hands-on abilities that written tests simply cannot capture.

Classification by mode of interpretation: norm-referenced vs. criterion-referenced tests

A final important distinction concerns how test scores are interpreted once they are collected.

Norm-referenced tests compare an individual’s score against the performance of a reference group – a large, representative sample of people who have already taken the test. The result tells you how a person performs relative to others. Standard IQ scores, for example, are norm-referenced: a score of 100 means average performance compared to the population.

Criterion-referenced tests, by contrast, measure performance against a fixed standard or learning objective, not against other people. A passing score on a professional licensing exam is criterion-referenced – the question is whether you have met a specific benchmark, not whether you scored higher than most other test-takers. Why these classifications matter

Understanding the types of psychological tests is not just an academic exercise. Each classification reflects real decisions about fairness, accuracy, and purpose. Choosing a verbal test for someone with limited language proficiency, or applying a speed test where depth of reasoning is what matters, can lead to misleading results and poor decisions – in clinical diagnosis, educational placement, or employment selection.
