It can feel anticlimactic, like the hard work is done and this is just a formality. But a poorly written conclusion can undercut an otherwise solid research report. A well-crafted one, on the other hand, leaves the reader with a clear sense of what was learned and why it matters. Writing a strong conclusion is genuinely one of the most important skills in psychological research writing.

There’s a common misconception that the conclusion is simply a recap of what you’ve already said. It isn’t. A strong conclusion in psychology research isn’t a single paragraph thrown together at the end. It has several distinct jobs to accomplish, each of which builds on the last.

In psychology, this is where you connect your findings to real-world relevance. Even experienced researchers fall into certain traps when writing conclusions. Here are the most common ones to watch out for.

Starting with “In conclusion”: It’s a wasted opening. Your reader knows this is the conclusion – it says so in the heading. Begin with a substantive statement instead. SJSU’s Writing Center is direct on this: avoid the phrase entirely.

Introducing new information: The conclusion is not the place to bring in new data, new citations, or new arguments you didn’t develop earlier in the paper. Simply repeating the discussion section: The conclusion and discussion have different functions. The discussion interprets findings in detail. Undermining your own authority: Avoid hedging language that casts doubt on your entire study. Phrases like “this is just one approach” or “the results may not be meaningful” do more damage than honest limitation statements. As the USC guide notes, the overall tone of your conclusion should convey confidence in the validity and reliability of your research.

Overstating the findings: On the flip side, grand claims that your study “resolves” a longstanding question or “proves” a theory are equally problematic. PLOS cautions against overstating importance, as it can lead readers to question the reliability of everything else in the paper. Confident, measured language is always more persuasive than inflated language.

Practical tips for writing a conclusion that resonates

Once you understand the structure and the pitfalls, a few practical strategies can help you write a conclusion that genuinely lands.

Keep it proportional: The conclusion is typically one of the shortest sections of the paper. Two to three well-developed paragraphs are usually sufficient. Resist the urge to pad it out – concision signals confidence. SJSU’s Writing Center notes there’s no hard rule on length, but conclusions are typically brief by design.

Circle back to the introduction: One of the most effective structural moves is to explicitly tie the conclusion back to the language and framing of your introduction.
