Every word in a research summary carries weight. Whether you’re condensing a 50-page study into a single paragraph or writing an abstract for a journal submission, the words you choose determine whether your research gets understood – or misread, ignored, or misrepresented. Word selection in a research summary is not just a stylistic preference; it is a core methodological skill that shapes how knowledge travels from the researcher to the reader.

Why word choice matters in a research summary

A research summary exists to give readers a clear, accurate, and condensed account of what a study found and why it matters. But this goal is only achievable if the words doing that work are the right ones. Poor word choice creates ambiguity, distorts findings, and can even mislead readers about the strength of the evidence. As Psychology Today explains, words shape how we think and respond – and when used with precision, they can direct understanding and influence conclusions. In research writing, that precision is non-negotiable.

Consider two versions of the same finding. One says, “the study proves that stress causes memory loss.” The other says, “the results suggest an association between elevated stress levels and reduced recall performance.” The second is more accurate. It does not overstate the evidence. Good psychological writing uses verbs like “suggests” or “indicates” rather than “proves” or “establishes” – because very few experiments are beyond doubt, and strong language implies a certainty that most research simply cannot support.

Start with critical reading before you write

Effective word selection begins before you type a single sentence. It begins with how carefully you read the source material. The University of Washington Psychology Writing Center emphasizes that the better you understand a study, the easier it becomes to explain it thoroughly and briefly. If you’re sticking closely to the original language and only making minor wording changes, that’s a sign you haven’t fully processed the material – not that you’ve paraphrased it.

Critical reading means asking: What is the central question this study addresses? What method was used? What did the data show? What do the authors claim this means? Once you can answer those questions without looking at the paper, you have what you need to write a summary in your own words – which is precisely the goal.

Take notes in your own voice

A practical technique is to read the source, close it, and then write a brief summary from memory. This forces you to process the information rather than reproduce it. Writing in Psychology guidelines from Allegheny College recommend writing substantive notes in the form they might appear in your paper – for example, summarizing a ten-page article into a single focused paragraph that captures the method, sample, and key finding. That summary becomes the raw material for your word choices when you sit down to write.

The principle of precise, plain language

Precise writing and plain writing are not opposites. The goal is to use the most accurate word, not the most complex one. In research writing, the focus should not be on using complex language but on choosing the most precise words. A researcher who uses the term “salutogenic” when writing for specialists is being precise. But if that same word appears in a summary aimed at a general audience without explanation, it becomes a barrier rather than a tool.

This is where the distinction between precision and jargon becomes critical. Precision means using the exact term that carries the correct meaning. Jargon means using field-specific terminology as shorthand that only insiders can decode. A summary that relies heavily on jargon doesn’t demonstrate expertise – it undermines accessibility.

When technical terms are necessary

Not all technical language can or should be avoided. Some concepts have no adequate plain-language equivalent, and replacing them with simpler alternatives may distort the meaning. The solution is to define any necessary terms in clear, simple language the first time they appear, then use them consistently throughout. For instance, if a summary references “regression analysis,” a brief parenthetical explanation – such as “(a statistical method for identifying relationships between variables)” – ensures readers don’t get lost without stripping the precision from the term.

The key rule: do not use more than one term to describe a single phenomenon. Alternating between synonyms for the same concept forces the reader to juggle vocabulary while trying to follow the argument. Pick the best word and stick with it throughout the summary.

Paraphrasing as the gold standard

In psychological and scientific writing, paraphrasing is strongly preferred over direct quotation. The APA is explicit on this point: published authors paraphrase their sources most of the time, and student authors should do the same. This is not merely a citation convention – it reflects something important about how word choice works in a summary.

When you paraphrase, you are doing intellectual work. You are taking someone else’s findings and translating them into language that reflects your own understanding. Paraphrasing gives you agency over your paper – it allows you to explain evidence in the way that most directly serves your argument, rather than simply presenting the original author’s framing and hoping it lands. A good paraphrase is not a lightly disguised copy of the source; it is a genuinely reworded, reconceived expression of the same idea.

Purdue OWL advises a useful approach: when reading a passage, try first to understand it as a whole rather than pausing to copy specific phrases. Then write the paraphrase without looking at the original. This minimizes the risk of unconsciously reproducing the source’s sentence structure – which is one of the most common paraphrasing errors.

The problem with patchwriting

Patchwriting refers to taking the original text and swapping individual words for synonyms while leaving the structure intact. It looks like paraphrasing but isn’t. It doesn’t demonstrate understanding, it risks plagiarism, and – critically – it usually produces awkward, stilted sentences, because the writer is constrained by someone else’s syntax. Tortured paraphrasing can turn perfectly clear source language into something confusing and imprecise. True paraphrasing means restructuring the idea entirely in your own grammatical and conceptual framework.

Logical arrangement of words and ideas

Even when individual word choices are strong, a summary can still fail if those words are arranged poorly. The order in which information is presented affects how much the reader retains and how well they follow the logic of the research. The University of Washington recommends following the same organizational structure as the original article – covering the research question, the method, the results, and the implications in that order – because this mirrors how readers already expect research to unfold.

Within sentences, clarity of arrangement matters just as much. Editage’s guidelines on accessible research communication recommend keeping sentences under 25 words and paragraphs under five sentences. Long, multi-clause sentences bury the main point. The reader shouldn’t have to re-read a sentence to extract its meaning. Shorter sentences allow each idea to breathe.

Use active voice to direct attention

Active voice is another powerful tool for clear word arrangement. “The researchers found a significant effect” is more direct and easier to follow than “a significant effect was found.” Active voice places the subject performing the action at the front of the sentence, which is where readers naturally look for it. Passive voice is not always wrong – sometimes the action itself is more important than who performed it – but defaulting to active voice as a starting point usually produces cleaner, more readable summaries.

Along the same lines, avoid nominalizations – verbs that have been turned into nouns. Instead of “we conducted an investigation,” write “we investigated.” Instead of “there was a reduction in anxiety,” write “anxiety decreased.” These small changes consistently improve readability and make your summaries feel less bureaucratic and more direct.

Knowing your reader

Word choice cannot happen in a vacuum. Every decision about which terms to use, how much to define, and how much background to assume depends on who will be reading the summary. A useful exercise is to think about how you would explain your topic to different audiences – a fellow student, a non-specialist, an expert in the field – and then choose an appropriate register. Writing for the major researcher when your audience is a general reader, or vice versa, will either confuse or condescend.

The University of Washington Psychology Writing Center captures this with a memorable phrase: write to an “intelligent, interested, naive, and slightly lazy” audience. Assume your reader is motivated to understand but does not want to struggle. Include all the important details, but don’t require expertise to access them. This frame helps writers make concrete decisions: Does this term need defining? Is this sentence too long? Is this sentence earning its place?

Conciseness as a discipline

A well-chosen word eliminates the need for several weak ones. Conciseness is not about making summaries shorter for the sake of brevity – it’s about ensuring that every word contributes directly to the meaning. Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Scholarly Communication describes concise writing as “efficient writing that uses fewer words to convey meaning,” making the writing shorter and more accessible without losing any substance.

Practically, this means cutting adverbs like “very” and “clearly” that do little work, avoiding redundant phrases like “in order to” (just use “to”), and checking whether any sentence is simply repeating what the previous one already said. A useful editing technique is to ask of each sentence: What would be lost if this were removed? If the honest answer is “nothing much,” cut it. Eliminate wordiness, and the words that remain will carry more weight.

Avoiding false certainty and evaluative language

Two of the most common word-choice errors in research summaries are overstating conclusions and importing hidden evaluations. Overstating happens when writers use language that implies more certainty than the data support. Words like “proves,” “confirms,” or “demonstrates conclusively” set a higher evidential bar than most studies can meet. Stick to language that accurately represents what the evidence shows: “suggests,” “indicates,” “is associated with,” or “is consistent with.”

Evaluative language is subtler. It creeps in when the writer frames findings in a way that implies a judgment – for example, describing one group’s behavior as “deprived” or “abnormal” when the data only show a difference. Writing guides for psychology advise testing for implied evaluation by substituting your own group for the group being described: if the revised statement feels offensive, there is probably bias embedded in the original. The summary’s job is to report, not to evaluate – unless evaluation is the explicit purpose of the writing.

The iterative nature of word selection

Choosing words well is not a one-pass process. It requires drafting, stepping away, and revising with fresh eyes. The University of Washington’s psychology writing guidance advises expecting to revise multiple times, and asking others – particularly those outside your field – to read the summary before finalizing it. If a reader from a different background stumbles over a term or phrase, that’s valuable feedback: the word choice needs work.

Seeking outside readers is one of the most effective strategies for identifying jargon that has become invisible to the writer. When you are deep in a subject, it’s easy to forget which terms are specialized. A reader who doesn’t share your background will quickly reveal which words are doing clear communicative work and which ones are insider shorthand that alienates anyone outside the discipline.
