When you read a psychology study and wonder, “Could someone actually run this experiment again and get the same results?”-the answer depends largely on one often-overlooked part of the method section: the apparatus and materials subsection. It may seem like a technical formality, but this subsection is where a study’s operational reality lives. It tells other researchers exactly what tools were used, what instruments measured the data, and what physical or digital resources made the whole study possible. Get it wrong or leave it vague, and reproducibility suffers. Get it right, and you’ve given the scientific community something genuinely valuable.

What the apparatus and materials subsection actually covers

In an APA-style research report, the method section is typically divided into subsections covering participants, materials and/or apparatus, and procedure. According to Hamilton College’s writing guidelines, the goal of this section is to describe your study in enough detail that another researcher could duplicate your methods exactly. The apparatus and materials subsection serves that goal by documenting the physical and conceptual tools of data collection.

It’s worth being clear on the distinction between the two terms, because they’re not interchangeable. Purdue University’s OWL resource defines apparatus as any equipment used during data collection-computers, eye-tracking devices, physiological monitors, and so on. Materials, by contrast, refer to scripts, surveys, questionnaires, or software used to collect data (not to analyze it). Both belong here, but they serve different functions in explaining how a study was operationalized.

Standard items vs. specialized apparatus: why the difference matters

Not everything used in a study needs the same level of description. A standard office chair, a plain white wall, or a typical desktop computer don’t require detailed write-ups-unless those features directly affect the study’s variables. What does need detail is any specialized or non-standard equipment.

The University of Washington’s APA writing guide offers a clear example: if a study measures how quickly a participant responds to a stimulus on a computer screen, the researcher must describe the software used, key monitor characteristics such as size, refresh rate, and contrast, and the distance between the participant and the screen. None of these are luxuries-they’re the variables that could shift results if different equipment were used. Conversely, the guide explicitly notes there’s no need to describe the size of a room or its general layout unless these are relevant to the study design.

The principle here is relevance to replication. Specialized apparatus should always include the model number and manufacturer. An EEG device, an eye-tracker, or a reaction-time apparatus are not interchangeable across brands and models. Omitting these details forces a future replicator to guess-or to contact the original authors, which is not always possible.

When to include model numbers

Model numbers might feel like minor administrative details, but they carry real scientific weight. APA guidelines on the methods section specify that instruments should be cited with model numbers for hardware and version details for software. This matters because instruments from the same manufacturer can differ meaningfully across versions-refresh rates improve, sensors get recalibrated, software algorithms change. A participant’s response time measured on one eye-tracker may not be directly comparable to data from an older model, even from the same brand. When model information is missing, it introduces an uncontrolled source of variability into any future replication attempt.

The role of materials in data collection

On the materials side, the most common element researchers need to describe is a questionnaire or psychological scale. Hanover College’s method section guide outlines what a good questionnaire description should include: the source of the questionnaire (with a citation if it was developed by someone else), what psychological construct it is designed to measure, its psychometric properties such as reliability, and one to three sample items to give readers a sense of its content.

This level of detail is not just good practice-it’s essential for evaluating the validity of the research. A questionnaire measuring anxiety, for instance, is not just a generic “anxiety measure.” Scales differ in what facets of anxiety they capture, how many items they include, and how they have been validated across different populations. Describing which scale was used, its origins, and its reliability statistics allows readers to assess whether the measurement tool was appropriate for the research question being asked.

Other types of materials to document

Beyond questionnaires, the materials subsection can include a wide range of items depending on the study design. A detailed review of psychology materials sections notes that this subsection should encompass instruments, stimuli, scripts given to participants, and any software used to present stimuli or collect responses. If any of these were created specifically for the study rather than adapted from existing sources, the researcher should explain how they were developed and, where applicable, how their validity was established.

Common examples include: word lists used in memory experiments, photographs or video clips shown as stimuli, vignettes used in social psychology studies, and rating scales developed by the research team. Each carries its own set of descriptive requirements. A word list needs to be characterized in terms of frequency, length, and emotional valence if those properties are relevant. A video clip needs its duration noted and its content described in enough detail that another researcher can source or create an equivalent.

Why this subsection is critical for reproducibility

The apparatus and materials subsection doesn’t exist merely to satisfy a formatting requirement. Its deeper purpose is to make psychological science reproducible-and reproducibility is not a bureaucratic virtue, it is a scientific one.

As the American Journal Experts explains, the methods section of any scientific manuscript is vital to the replication process because it details exactly how a study was conducted, allowing other researchers to evaluate and reproduce it. When the apparatus and materials are described vaguely-or not at all-that chain breaks. A future researcher attempting a replication has no reliable baseline, and any differences in results become impossible to attribute to genuine psychological effects versus differences in equipment or instruments.

A National Academies report on reproducibility and replicability in science confirms this directly: a methods section routinely covers what materials were used, how participants or samples were chosen, and what data collection procedures were followed, and the failure to report some aspect of the study in sufficient detail can make it difficult for another researcher to replicate the result. Measurement errors, for instance, may go entirely undetected until a failed replication reveals that something was wrong in the original study’s instrumentation.

This matters particularly in psychology, where the Association for Psychological Science has highlighted replication and open science as central concerns, including initiatives that reward researchers for making their materials openly accessible to other scientists. Transparent, detailed apparatus and materials reporting is one of the most direct contributions an individual researcher can make to this broader effort.

Practical tips for writing this subsection well

Knowing what to include is one thing; writing it clearly is another. A few principles make this subsection more effective.

Avoid redundancy. If a questionnaire is described in the materials subsection, it should not be described again in the procedure subsection. The reader will carry that information forward. Repeating it wastes space and can create confusion if the descriptions differ slightly.

Be precise about what’s standard and what’s specialized. Decide early on which pieces of equipment are generic enough to go undetailed and which require model numbers, technical specs, or citations. The guiding question is always: would a difference in this equipment plausibly affect the results?

Include reliability information for scales. Scribbr’s guide to APA methods sections recommends specifying instruments like tests, scales, or inventories with details about their reliability and validity. Reporting a Cronbach’s alpha, for example, tells readers how internally consistent the scale was in the current sample-not just in prior studies.

Cite the source of any borrowed materials. If a questionnaire, stimulus set, or task was developed by other researchers, it must be cited. This gives credit where it’s due and allows readers to locate the original validation studies, which are often necessary context for interpreting a measure’s appropriateness.

Don’t describe data analysis software here. Programs like SPSS, R, or Python are used to analyze data, not collect it. These belong in the data analysis portion of the methods section, not in apparatus and materials.

A note on the naming conventions

One small but useful thing to know: the University of Washington’s APA writing guide notes that this subsection may also be called Stimuli, Equipment, or Apparatus, depending on what best fits the study. There is no single correct label. A cognitive study using visual stimuli might call this subsection “Stimuli.” A neuroimaging study might use “Equipment.” The label should reflect what actually appears in the subsection so that readers can immediately understand what kind of tools and resources were involved. What matters far more than the heading is whether the content gives another researcher a genuine roadmap to replicate your study.
