Before a psychologist designs a study, recruits participants, or formulates a single hypothesis, there is one essential task that must come first: reviewing what is already known. This step – the literature review – is not just a formality or an academic exercise. It is the intellectual foundation on which all meaningful research is built. Without it, researchers risk wasting time on problems that have already been solved, overlooking crucial variables, or building arguments on shaky theoretical ground. Understanding why the literature review matters, and how to do it well, is one of the most important skills any psychology researcher can develop.

What is a literature review?

In research, the word “literature” does not refer to novels or poetry. It refers to the body of published scholarship in a given field – journal articles, books, dissertations, and other academic sources. A literature review surveys this existing research on a specific topic, summarizing and synthesizing what is known in order to inform a new investigation. It is not simply a list of summaries; it is a critical, analytical overview that identifies patterns, contradictions, and gaps across multiple studies.

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), a literature review is a survey of previously published work on a topic that aims to define and clarify a particular problem, summarize previous investigations, identify relations and inconsistencies in the literature, and suggest the next step in solving the problem. That definition alone reveals just how central this step is to the entire research process.

Why the literature review is the starting point of good research

Every research project begins with a question. But how do you know whether that question is worth asking – or whether someone else has already answered it? The literature review resolves this. It identifies areas of prior scholarship to prevent duplication of effort, points the way toward fulfilling a need for additional research, and locates your own study within the context of existing knowledge. In a field as broad and evolving as psychology, this context is indispensable.

Beyond preventing redundancy, the literature review helps researchers sharpen their focus. By understanding what prior studies have found – and where they fall short – a researcher can refine their research question, select the most relevant variables, and design a study that genuinely adds to what is known. It informs the reader of the researcher’s knowledge of the relevant research already conducted and places the current study in context of previous studies.

Identifying gaps: the core function of the review

One of the most valuable outcomes of a thorough literature review is the identification of research gaps – areas where knowledge is incomplete, contradictory, or entirely absent. In psychology, gaps can take several forms. There may be a knowledge gap where a phenomenon has simply never been studied. There may be a conceptual gap where a theory exists but lacks clarity or empirical support. Or there may be a methodological gap where existing studies relied on flawed or limited research designs.

By identifying what has already been studied and what areas are yet to be explored, researchers can focus their efforts on addressing the gaps rather than repeating existing research. This ensures that time, resources, and effort are used efficiently – and that new studies actually move the field forward.

Gaps are often found by paying attention to what prior researchers themselves acknowledge. The Discussion and Future Research sections of published articles are particularly useful, as authors often explicitly flag unanswered questions or limitations in their own work. Reviewing multiple studies in the same area can also reveal inconsistent findings – a strong signal that further investigation is needed.

Compiling knowledge and understanding variables

A literature review does more than identify what is unknown – it also deepens the researcher’s understanding of what is already known. By reading through articles and books and taking notes on key points, ideas, and findings, researchers absorb as much information as possible before beginning their own work. This process allows them to see which variables have been studied most extensively, which relationships between variables have been confirmed or disputed, and which theoretical frameworks are most widely accepted.

This accumulated knowledge directly shapes the design of the new study. It helps researchers decide which variables to measure, how to define them operationally, and what outcomes to expect. Without this foundation, researchers may unknowingly ignore important factors, measure variables imprecisely, or propose hypotheses that are already well established – or already disproven.

Organizing and synthesizing what you find

A literature review is not a random collection of summaries. It requires deliberate organization. Reviews can be organized chronologically, presenting information as it develops over time, or thematically, grouping studies by concept or theoretical approach. The choice of structure depends on the nature of the research area and the story the researcher wants to tell. A thematic structure works well when reviewing multiple theories or perspectives; a chronological one is better suited to tracing how understanding of a phenomenon has evolved.

Regardless of structure, the goal is synthesis – not just description. A good literature review identifies the relationship of works in the context of their contribution to the topic, highlights where studies agree, flags where they contradict each other, and builds a coherent argument for why the proposed new research is necessary and original.

Sources used in a psychology literature review

Where do researchers find the literature they need to review? Psychology has a rich ecosystem of scholarly resources, each serving a different purpose.

Academic journals

Peer-reviewed journal articles are the primary source of empirical evidence in psychology. Peer-reviewed, scholarly articles are widely considered to be the gold standard of scientific research. Leading psychology journals – such as Psychological Science, Psychological Bulletin, and Journal of Experimental Psychology – publish the latest findings across every subfield. Journals like Annual Review of Psychology and Psychological Bulletin specialize in publishing comprehensive review articles that survey entire research areas, making them especially valuable starting points.

Books and academic texts

Books and ebooks provide detailed information on a research area, put the topic in context, provide summaries of research, and help identify major themes and relationships. While books are updated less frequently than journal articles, they offer broader theoretical frameworks that are difficult to find in shorter publications. Textbooks, in particular, can provide a useful overview of a field before a researcher narrows their focus.

Databases: PsycINFO and beyond

Efficiently locating relevant literature requires access to specialized databases. APA PsycINFO is the world’s largest resource devoted to peer-reviewed literature in behavioral science and mental health, produced by the American Psychological Association. It covers journal articles, books, chapters, and dissertations, and is updated regularly to keep pace with new publications. Its strength lies in its use of a controlled vocabulary – the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms – which ensures precise, consistent searching across a massive body of literature.

Beyond PsycINFO, researchers commonly use databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, each of which covers different ranges of sources and disciplines. For topics that intersect with medicine, neuroscience, or education, searching multiple databases is essential to ensure a comprehensive review.

To conduct an extensive and thorough search, researchers are generally advised to search three to five databases separately, adapting their search terms for each one’s unique indexing system. They may also use citation searching – examining the reference lists of key articles and tracking who has subsequently cited those articles – to map the full breadth of a research area.

Building a theoretical framework

One of the less obvious but critically important functions of the literature review is the development of a theoretical framework. The introduction of a literature review explains the focus and establishes the importance of the subject, discussing what kind of work has been done on the topic and identifying any controversies within the field or any recent research which has raised questions. This narrative situates the new study within a broader intellectual tradition, connecting its hypotheses to established theories and prior findings.

A well-constructed theoretical framework does not just summarize what is known – it explains why the proposed research matters and how its findings are likely to contribute to ongoing debates in the field. This makes the difference between a study that feels arbitrary and one that feels like a natural and necessary next step.

From review to research: the practical payoff

The literature review is not an end in itself. Its ultimate purpose is to set up better research. By the time a researcher has completed a thorough review, they should have a clear, well-defined research question, a set of relevant and operationally defined variables, a sense of which methods have worked well in similar studies, and a theoretical framework that links their work to the broader field.

A well-written literature review gives the reader a sense of the story of a research area – where it started, where it stands now, and where it needs to go. That story is what makes new research feel meaningful rather than arbitrary.

In practical terms, this means that cutting corners on the literature review is never a wise choice. Researchers who skip or superficially complete this step often find themselves mid-study discovering that a key variable was omitted, their methodology has a well-known flaw, or their central finding was already published a decade ago. A comprehensive review at the outset protects against all of these outcomes.
