Social psychology is fundamentally concerned with a deceptively simple question: why do people think, feel, and act the way they do when others are involved? The answer, it turns out, is far from simple. Our social behavior and thought are shaped by a complex web of interacting forces – from the people physically present around us, to our internal mental machinery, to the climate and design of the spaces we inhabit, to the cultural world we were raised in, and even to the biological inheritance written into our genes. Social psychologists have identified five primary factors that collectively explain the causes of social behavior and thought. Understanding each of them is essential for making sense of human interaction at any level.

The actions and characteristics of others
One of the most direct influences on social behavior is simply the presence and conduct of other people. Social psychologists assert that individuals’ thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are very much influenced by social situations – and specifically by what others around them are doing. When people enter an unfamiliar social setting, they instinctively scan the room and model their behavior on the cues others provide. This process is not always conscious; much of it happens automatically.
Classic research by Solomon Asch in the 1950s made this vivid. In his conformity experiments, participants frequently agreed with an obviously wrong group answer simply because everyone else in the room had already stated it. Social influence involves changes in a person’s behavior induced by the presence or actions of others, and conformity – a type of social influence – occurs when individuals adjust their thoughts or actions to align with a group, often to gain approval or avoid conflict.
Beyond conformity, the characteristics of others matter too – their perceived status, authority, attractiveness, and similarity to us all shape how we respond to them. One of the most important factors in interpersonal attraction is similarity: the more alike two people are in attitudes, backgrounds, and worldviews, the more likely they are to be drawn to each other. This is not a minor point – it has downstream effects on friendship formation, cooperation, trust, and even prejudice.
Basic cognitive processes
Our social behavior does not just respond to the external world – it is filtered through a rich internal landscape of mental activity. Memory, reasoning, beliefs, and attention all shape how we perceive and respond to social situations. Social cognition – the study of mental processes involved in perceiving, attending to, remembering, and making sense of people in the social world – is now the dominant model within mainstream social psychology.
Memory and social perception
Memory is not a passive recording of what happened; it actively shapes how we understand and predict social situations. Research shows that autobiographical memory and the ability to infer the mental states of others share extensive neurological overlap, and that our personal experiences become a kind of social conceptual knowledge that informs strategic social behavior. In practical terms, the experiences stored in our memory influence how we read other people’s intentions, how much we trust them, and how we anticipate their behavior.
Reasoning, beliefs, and cognitive shortcuts
Social cognition applies concepts from cognitive psychology – including schemas, heuristics, and attributions – to the domain of social life. We rely on mental shortcuts called schemas to categorize people and situations rapidly. While efficient, these shortcuts introduce systematic biases. One of the most studied is the fundamental attribution error – the tendency to attribute other people’s behavior to their personality traits while underestimating the role of the situation. Lay people tend to over-rely on dispositional explanations for behavior and ignore the power of situational influences, which can lead to unfair judgments and misunderstandings in everyday social life.
Beliefs also shape what we remember. Many social psychologists are interested in social cognition – the reasoning underlying phenomena such as persuasion – and in understanding how thought processes underlie attitudes and social behavior. When people hold a stereotype, for example, they tend to encode and recall information in stereotype-consistent ways, reinforcing existing beliefs even when contradictory evidence is present.
Ecological variables: the physical environment
Where we are physically located has a surprisingly powerful effect on how we behave socially. Environmental psychology examines the interplay between physical environments – both natural and built – and human behavior, including how people perceive and organize information from their surroundings, their emotional and evaluative responses to different environments, and the influence of personality traits on those interactions.
The pioneer of this perspective, Kurt Lewin, proposed that behavior is a joint function of the interaction between the person and the environment – a premise that has since become foundational to modern psychology. Barker and Wright later developed ecological psychology, studying what they called behavior settings – small ecological units enclosing everyday human behavior (such as the restaurant or the pharmacy) with both physical-spatial and social aspects.
Crowding, noise, and space design
Prolonged, high indoor density acts as an environmental stressor, often impairing health, affecting cardiac functions, and disrupting social interaction – causing increased aggression, withdrawal, and reduced cooperation. Conversely, access to natural spaces appears to have restorative effects. Exposure to urban green spaces has been linked to improved working memory, reduced aggression, and positive, reflective thinking.
This means environmental design is not merely an architectural concern – it is a social psychological one. The layout of a classroom, the noise level in a workplace, or the presence of natural light in a hospital all feed directly into how people relate to one another and regulate their behavior. Human behavior is not simply a product of individual traits but is also shaped by the social, cultural, and physical contexts in which it occurs – and ecological variables are among the most concrete of those contexts.
Cultural context: norms and group memberships
Perhaps no single factor is more pervasive in shaping social behavior than culture. The norms, values, traditions, and social roles embedded in a culture do not just tell people what to do – they shape what feels natural, what seems possible, and what counts as a violation. Cultural norms are the shared expectations and rules that guide behavior of people within social groups, learned and reinforced from parents, friends, teachers, and others while growing up.
Individualism, collectivism, and normative tightness
Cross-cultural research has consistently shown that people in individualistic cultures – where personal autonomy is prioritized – and collectivist cultures – where group harmony and interdependence are central – behave quite differently in social situations. Individualism values personal interests and independence, whereas collectivism emphasizes group harmony and loyalty, and countries differ substantially in how they endorse these values, influencing people’s reactions to social norm violations.
Research by Michele Gelfand and colleagues has further shown that cultures vary in “tightness” – the degree to which social norms are strongly enforced. People living in tight cultures become more focused on avoiding mistakes, are more cautious in their own behavior, and more closely monitor themselves and others for norm violations. This cultural tightness affects everything from workplace behavior to political attitudes.
Group membership and identity
Our social behavior is also profoundly shaped by the groups we belong to – or identify with. Social norms refer to group or cultural expectations about how a person should behave, and people have a natural desire for belonging that keeps them from violating norms – even when they privately disagree with them. Group membership confers identity, belonging, and a sense of what behaviors are expected. It also drives in-group favoritism and out-group discrimination, two phenomena that social psychologists have studied extensively.
Biological aspects: genetic and physiological influences
No account of social behavior is complete without acknowledging the biological substrate on which it rests. Contemporary social psychology acknowledges the roles of biology – including genes, hormones, and brain processes – alongside culture in shaping social behavior. These biological influences do not operate in isolation from social factors; rather, they interact with them in complex and sometimes surprising ways.
Hormones and social bonding
Hormones play a direct role in key social behaviors. Oxytocin, commonly associated with bonding and trust, facilitates prosocial behavior and is released during physical contact and positive social interactions. Cortisol, the stress hormone, is elevated in situations of social threat and can alter how people interact when under pressure – increasing defensiveness or social withdrawal. The role of testosterone in aggressive behavior is a clear instance where biology intersects with the social, and ignoring such biological components can lead to an incomplete understanding of human behavior.
Genetics and evolutionary foundations
Kin selection theory proposes that individuals are more likely to engage in behaviors that help close relatives because it increases the likelihood of passing on shared genetic material, while natural selection can be applied to understand social dominance and mating behaviors. These evolutionary perspectives help explain why certain social behaviors – such as cooperation within groups or aggression toward outsiders – appear so consistently across cultures and historical periods.
The human brain itself reflects this social evolutionary history. The prefrontal cortex, involved in higher-level cognitive processes such as decision-making and social behavior, has undergone significant expansion in humans compared to other primates – an expansion thought to reflect the increased importance of social cognition in human evolution. Social behavior, in other words, has literally shaped the organ we use to think with.
How these five factors work together
Behavior is a product of both the situation – cultural influences, social roles, the presence of bystanders – and the person, including personality characteristics and internal states. None of the five factors operates in a vacuum. A person raised in a collectivist culture (cultural context) who has a heightened sensitivity to social rejection (biological basis) will interpret a group’s silence differently depending on whether they are in a quiet library or a crowded market (ecological variables), how they remember past social rejections (cognitive processes), and whether they have recently witnessed others being excluded (actions of others). These factors combine dynamically in every social moment.
This is why social psychology resists overly simple explanations. Social psychology is concerned with the way psychological factors – thoughts, beliefs, intentions, goals – are constructed and how they influence interactions with others, and that construction process draws on all five causal layers simultaneously. Recognizing each of these layers does not just help us understand human behavior academically – it gives us practical tools for interpreting the people around us, and for reflecting on why we ourselves do what we do.
