Why do humans cooperate with strangers, feel protective of their families, or sometimes act aggressively when resources are scarce? These are not random quirks of personality – according to sociobiology and evolutionary social psychology, they may be behaviors shaped over millions of years of natural selection. These fields offer a powerful lens for understanding the biological roots of human social life, though they also sit at the center of one of psychology’s most spirited debates: how much of what we do is written in our genes?

What is sociobiology?
Sociobiology is the systematic study of how natural selection shapes the biological basis of all social behavior. The field was formally established by biologist E. O. Wilson with his landmark 1975 book Sociobiology: The New Synthesis. Wilson defined sociobiology as “the extension of population biology and evolutionary theory to social organization.” In simpler terms, it proposes that just as physical traits like eye color are influenced by genes, so too are many social behaviors – and that behaviors contributing to survival and reproduction tend to get passed down through generations.
Sociobiology applies evolutionary biology to social behavior, drawing on disciplines including psychology, ethology, anthropology, zoology, and population genetics. It examines social behaviors such as mating patterns, territorial competition, cooperative hunting, and parental care – treating them as products of natural selection rather than purely cultural inventions.
The role of genes in social behavior
A core idea in sociobiology is that certain genes or gene combinations that influence behavioral traits can be inherited from generation to generation. Behavior, in this view, is an organism’s effort to preserve its genes in the population. Research in human behavior genetics has found that traits such as creativity, extroversion, aggressiveness, and IQ show significant heritability – though researchers are careful to note that heritability does not eliminate the influence of environmental or cultural factors on these traits.
Sociobiologists also proposed that even emotions serve an evolutionary function. Several sociobiologists have argued that “moral emotions” such as trust, loyalty, guilt, and shame evolved as psychological mechanisms to mediate social interactions in an evolutionarily stable way. For instance, guilt may have evolved to discourage repeated defection in cooperative relationships, while gratitude reinforces reciprocal helping behaviors.
Evolutionary social psychology: a closer look at the mind
While sociobiology focuses primarily on behavior at the population and species level, evolutionary social psychology zooms in on the psychological mechanisms behind those behaviors. Evolutionary psychology developed from sociobiology, with more attention to mind and mental dispositions as evolutionary determinants rather than genes alone.
Evolutionary psychologists examine how evolution shaped human behavior and cognition in ways that helped individuals pass on their genes to future generations – covering topics such as cooperation, mate preference, parental care, language development, the need to belong, helping and altruism, and the universality of emotions. The field rests on three major premises: that there is a universal human nature built on evolved psychological mechanisms, that these mechanisms were shaped by natural selection, and that they were originally adapted to ancestral environments that may differ from our modern circumstances.
Key adaptive behaviors: cooperation and aggression
Two social behaviors that have received particular attention in evolutionary social psychology are cooperation and aggression – both of which appear across cultures and species, suggesting deep evolutionary roots.
Cooperation is explained primarily through two mechanisms. The first is kin selection, developed by mathematician W. D. Hamilton. Kin selection theory holds that animals are more likely to engage in altruistic behavior toward close relatives because doing so increases the chances of their shared genes being passed on to future generations. Hamilton formalized this in a simple rule: altruism is favored by natural selection when the benefit to the recipient, weighted by genetic relatedness, exceeds the cost to the helper. This helps explain why people tend to be more generous and self-sacrificing toward family members than toward strangers.
The second mechanism is reciprocal altruism, developed by biologist Robert Trivers. Reciprocal altruism describes a behavior whereby an organism temporarily reduces its own fitness while increasing another’s, with the expectation that the other organism will act similarly at a later time. This is essentially the biological basis for “I scratch your back, you scratch mine” – a strategy that makes cooperation viable even among non-relatives, as long as interactions are repeated and cheating can be detected.
Aggression, on the other hand, is understood as a behavior that evolved to secure resources, mates, territory, and social status. Key factors contributing to aggression include competition for food, mating opportunities, social status, and territory, as well as genetic factors, hormonal changes, and individual temperament. From an evolutionary standpoint, a certain degree of aggression was adaptive because it allowed individuals to defend what was necessary for survival and reproduction.
Sociobiology vs. evolutionary psychology: an important distinction
Though closely related, sociobiology and evolutionary social psychology differ in their emphasis. Sociobiology distinguishes itself from evolutionary psychology, which stresses mental mechanisms more than genes as the evolutionary determinant of adaptiveness. Where sociobiology focuses on population-level patterns of social organization – how entire societies emerge from evolved behaviors – evolutionary psychology concentrates on the details of individual behavior, including the role of brain activity and its development over the individual’s life history.
In practical terms, this means a sociobiologist might ask: “Why do social insects form colonies?” while an evolutionary psychologist asks: “What cognitive mechanisms drive humans to form in-groups and cooperate within them?” Both questions are rooted in evolution but approach it from different angles.
The debate: biology vs. culture
Sociobiology and evolutionary social psychology have generated substantial criticism since their emergence. The core objection is that these fields reduce complex, variable human behavior to overly simplistic biological explanations.
Critics, led by Richard Lewontin and Stephen Jay Gould, argued that genes play a role in human behavior, but that traits such as aggressiveness could be explained by social environment rather than by biology alone. Harvard biologist Lewontin went further, suggesting that in developing human consciousness, genes have ceded their power to a new level of causation – that of social interaction, with its own laws and its own nature. Anthropologist Marshall Sahlins similarly argued that biology, while necessary for culture, is wholly insufficient to specify the cultural properties of human behavior or explain variations between human groups.
Evolutionary psychologists are also frequently criticized for ignoring the vast bodies of literature in psychology, anthropology, sociology, archaeology, and the humanities. A particularly pointed concern is genetic determinism – the claim that behavior is hardwired into our genes, which critics say oversimplifies development and leaves little room for individual agency, learning, and social change. Outspoken critics helped popularize a “dialectical” approach to human behavior, where biology and environment interact in complex ways to produce what we observe.
Traits that are subject to highly adaptive individual learning or social transmission may appear to be evolutionary adaptations even when they were not directly shaped by natural selection – a methodological pitfall that critics argue undermines some of sociobiology’s central claims.
The nature-nurture debate reframed
Contemporary researchers largely reject the idea that biology and culture are opposing forces. Both sides of the debate stress that framing this as “biology vs. environment” or “genes vs. culture” amounts to a false dichotomy. Instead, the emerging consensus is that genetic predispositions create a foundation for behavior, but social experiences, cognitive processes, and cultural norms shape how those predispositions are expressed.
Consider aggression: a biological tendency toward competitive behavior does not predetermine violence. Laws, social norms, upbringing, and individual cognition all modulate whether and how that tendency manifests. In both animal and human evolution, gene-culture coevolution plays a crucial role – genes and cultural practices have co-shaped each other across generations, producing the complex behavioral landscape we see today.
Integrating biology and social science
The most productive contemporary work in this area does not pit biology against culture but integrates both. Evolutionary psychologists acknowledge a “complex psychology” in humans, with genes and culture sometimes working together, sometimes pulling in opposite directions. The goal is not to show that behavior is fixed by evolution, but to understand the evolved psychological tendencies that make humans susceptible – or resistant – to particular social influences.
This integrated approach has practical value. Understanding that cooperation has deep evolutionary roots, for instance, can inform how organizations build trust, how schools teach prosocial behavior, and how societies design institutions that bring out our cooperative tendencies rather than our competitive ones. Similarly, understanding the evolutionary basis of in-group favoritism can help explain prejudice – not to excuse it, but to address it more effectively.
Sociobiology and evolutionary psychology focus on how patterns of social behavior emerge from individual behaviors under ecological and environmental constraints – a perspective that, when combined with cultural and cognitive psychology, offers some of the richest accounts of why humans behave the way they do in social contexts.
