Why do people become aggressive? Is it something buried deep in our biology, a response to blocked goals, something we learn from watching others – or all of the above? Psychologists have been wrestling with these questions for over a century. From Sigmund Freud’s dark vision of human instincts to the sophisticated computational logic of the General Aggression Model, each theory has brought us closer to understanding one of the most complex and consequential behaviors humans display. This post walks through the major psychological theories of aggression, what each one gets right, and how they collectively build toward a more complete picture.

Freud’s psychodynamic theory: the life and death instincts
Sigmund Freud laid the earliest psychological groundwork for understanding aggression. In his 1920 work Beyond the Pleasure Principle, Freud proposed that human behavior is driven by two opposing fundamental instincts: Eros (the life instinct) and a destructive death instinct – commonly referred to as Thanatos, though that name was actually coined by Freud’s colleague Wilhelm Stekel, not Freud himself.
Eros encompasses drives toward survival, love, reproduction, and creativity. The death instinct, in contrast, represents an unconscious pull toward destruction and a return to an inorganic state. Freud theorized that because Eros blocks self-directed destruction, the energy of the death instinct gets redirected outward – manifesting as aggression toward others. This makes aggression not a reaction to external events, but a constantly flowing internal pressure in need of release.
Freud also used the concept of displacement to explain why aggression rarely targets its true source. When people cannot safely direct their aggression at the actual target – because it is too dangerous or unavailable – they redirect it toward a safer substitute. This unconscious redirection is central to phenomena like scapegoating, where frustrated groups unleash hostility on convenient social targets.
Freud’s theory has significant limitations: it is largely untestable, relies heavily on clinical speculation, and was eventually distanced from even by Freud himself in his later writings. In works like The Ego and the Id (1923) and Civilization and Its Discontents (1930), Freud revised his position, treating the death drive less as an independent instinct and more as a mechanism behind self-criticism and repressed guilt. Nonetheless, his idea of aggression as a fundamental, internally driven force shaped all subsequent theories.
The frustration-aggression hypothesis
In 1939, a group of Yale University psychologists – John Dollard, Leonard Doob, Neal Miller, O.H. Mowrer, and Robert Sears – published what became one of the most widely debated theories in aggression research. Their central claim: aggression is a natural outcome of frustration, and frustration is always caused by the blocking of goal-directed behavior. The theory was bold, parsimonious, and controversial in equal measure.
The original formulation was quickly criticized for being too rigid. Critics noted that frustration can produce many responses besides aggression – withdrawal, problem-solving, or sadness, for instance. By 1941, the Yale group had already revised their hypothesis, stating that frustration produces an instigation toward various responses, of which aggression is only one possibility.
Berkowitz’s reformulation and cognitive neo-association theory
The most significant revision came from Leonard Berkowitz. In his 1989 reformulation, Berkowitz proposed that frustration generates aggressive inclinations primarily to the degree that it arouses negative affect – not simply because a goal is blocked. This shifted the theoretical focus from the external event (goal-blocking) to the internal emotional state it produces.
Berkowitz went further with his cognitive neo-association theory, developed in 1990. This theory proposed that aversive experiences – pain, heat, foul odors, frustration – automatically activate a network of negative emotions, thoughts, and memories associated with past aggressive reactions. These associations, in turn, prime the individual for fight-or-flight responses. The theory explains why a wide range of unpleasant experiences, not just blocked goals, can trigger aggression. It also helps clarify why certain cues in the environment (weapons, aggressive imagery) can amplify aggressive responses by activating existing mental associations.
Social learning theory: aggression as learned behavior
Albert Bandura offered a fundamentally different perspective. Rather than locating aggression in instinct or frustration, Bandura’s social learning theory holds that aggression is not innate but a behavior acquired through observing others. His landmark 1961 Bobo doll experiment demonstrated this directly: children who watched adults behave aggressively toward an inflatable doll subsequently replicated that aggression – both physically and verbally – when placed in the same situation.
Central to the theory is the concept of vicarious reinforcement. When an observed model is seen to be rewarded for aggressive behavior, the observer learns that aggression is an effective means of getting what they want, making imitation more likely. Bandura considered family members to be the most primary source of aggressive modeling, but he equally emphasized the role of media figures and peers.
Social learning theory marked a major conceptual shift: aggression moved from being an innate impulse to a context-dependent, learned response shaped by social environment. This has profound implications for understanding how violence can be transmitted across generations and how media exposure might influence aggressive behavior.
Script theory: aggression guided by mental blueprints
Script theory, developed primarily by L. Rowell Huesmann in the 1980s, extends the logic of social learning into cognitive territory. According to this theory, individuals learn aggressive “scripts” from their environment – including mass media – that function as well-learned, highly accessible mental representations of situation-specific goals and action plans. Once a relevant situation triggers a script, the person uses it as a behavioral blueprint.
Think of scripts as cognitive shortcuts for social situations. A child who repeatedly observes that conflicts end in physical confrontation may encode a script that links provocation directly with physical retaliation. A script may even include affect as an action rule – for instance, prescribing aggressive retaliation, but only when anger reaches a sufficiently high level. Over time, frequently rehearsed scripts become increasingly automatic, requiring less deliberate thought to activate.
Script theory is particularly useful for understanding chronic aggression – why some individuals seem primed for aggressive responses across many situations – and for analyzing the cumulative effects of exposure to violent media.
Excitation transfer theory: when arousal gets misattributed
Dolf Zillmann’s excitation transfer theory, introduced in the 1970s, takes a more physiological approach. The theory holds that physiological arousal from one event carries over into subsequent interactions and can be misattributed in a way that intensifies aggression. Crucially, the person may not recognize that their heightened state stems from a prior, unrelated event.
The mechanism works like this: a person experiences arousal from some source – physical exertion, a tense meeting, emotional stress. They then encounter a mildly provocative situation. Because residual arousal is still present and misattributed to the provocation, their emotional response is amplified well beyond what the new event warrants. Zillmann’s research showed that this excitation transfer effect can persist even after the arousal has physiologically dissipated, as long as the individual’s self-label of “angry” or “upset” remains active.
Excitation transfer theory is particularly relevant for understanding road rage, post-exercise confrontations, and how emotionally charged environments (stadiums, protests) can amplify individual aggression. It also helps explain why people who are not inherently violent can still act aggressively under specific circumstances.
The General Aggression Model: an integrated framework
By the early 2000s, researchers Craig Anderson and Brad Bushman recognized that no single theory could capture the full complexity of human aggression. Their solution was the General Aggression Model (GAM) – an integrative framework that unifies social learning theory, cognitive neo-association theory, script theory, excitation transfer theory, and social interaction theory into a single comprehensive model.
The GAM also distinguishes between proximate and distal factors. Proximate factors are immediate – the emotions and perceptions present in the moment of a potential aggressive act. Distal factors are broader and more foundational, including biological makeup, childhood environment, media exposure, and cultural norms. Someone raised in a household with persistent violence, for example, develops a distal foundation that makes aggressive responses more likely across many future situations, regardless of proximate triggers.
Why the GAM matters
What makes the GAM especially powerful is its cyclical structure. The model depicts aggression not as a one-time event but as part of an ongoing cycle of social interaction, where each aggressive episode shapes knowledge structures, scripts, and personality in ways that influence future episodes. Aggression, in other words, feeds back into the very inputs that produce it.
The GAM has been applied to understand a broad range of real-world phenomena: the effects of violent video games and media, the roots of domestic violence, the psychology of terrorism, and the development of bullying behavior. Because GAM addresses both individual and societal dimensions of aggression, researchers have used it as a framework for designing interventions aimed at reducing violence across multiple contexts.
How the theories relate to each other
These theories are not competing so much as complementary. Freud established that aggression has deep internal roots. The frustration-aggression hypothesis showed it can be triggered by external obstacles. Berkowitz’s cognitive neo-association theory revealed that any aversive experience – not just frustration – can set off aggressive networks. Bandura demonstrated that social observation shapes how and when we act on those drives. Script theory showed how repeated exposure crystallizes aggressive patterns into automatic cognitive schemas. Excitation transfer explained how physiology amplifies all of the above. And the GAM integrated these mechanisms into a dynamic, testable model.
More recent research continues to extend the frustration-aggression tradition, with scholars like Kruglanski and colleagues arguing that aggression often functions as a means of restoring a sense of personal significance – activated when an individual’s sense of social worth is threatened or humiliated. This “significance quest” perspective suggests that the motivational roots of aggression may be even broader than frustration or negative affect alone.
Together, these theories reveal aggression not as a simple, single-cause behavior, but as a multi-layered phenomenon shaped by instinct, emotion, cognition, learning, and social context. Understanding this complexity is the first step toward addressing it – whether in clinical settings, conflict prevention, media policy, or everyday life.
