Why are you drawn to some people and not others? The answer isn’t random – it’s the product of psychological forces that researchers have been studying for decades. Theories of interpersonal attraction offer a structured lens through which we can understand why relationships form, what keeps them going, and why certain traits consistently pull us toward particular people. From economic-style cost-benefit calculations to deep biological drives shaped by evolution, these frameworks reveal that attraction is far more complex – and far more fascinating – than it might seem.

What is interpersonal attraction?
Interpersonal attraction refers to the positive emotional pull one person feels toward another – a force that drives the formation and maintenance of relationships ranging from casual friendships to romantic partnerships. It is characterized by a positive emotional response where individuals desire to be in each other’s presence, and is shaped by multiple factors including proximity, physical attractiveness, similarity, social exchange, equity, and instrumentality. Understanding these forces requires looking at several complementary theories, each of which illuminates a different piece of the puzzle.
The reinforcement-affect model: attraction through positive feelings
One of the earliest and most foundational explanations of attraction comes from Byrne and Clore’s reinforcement-affect model, proposed in 1970. Rooted in classical conditioning, this model holds that when we experience a rewarding event, our emotional state becomes linked to a specific feature of the environment – and we are subsequently drawn to people who make us feel good. In simple terms, we develop attraction toward those whose presence is reliably associated with positive emotions, whether through praise, humor, shared excitement, or simple warmth.
The principle of reinforcement is one of the most basic notions in all of psychology: behaviors followed by desirable consequences tend to be repeated. In the context of attraction, this means we are drawn toward interactions that yield positive outcomes or rewards. This model is elegant in its simplicity, but it doesn’t account for the more complex calculations people make when choosing and maintaining relationships – which is where social exchange theory steps in.
Social exchange theory: the cost-benefit calculus of attraction
The foundation of social exchange theory was introduced by George C. Homans in 1958 in his work “Social Behavior as Exchange,” where he applied principles of behavioral psychology and sociology to social interactions. It was later formalized by Thibaut and Kelley (1959), who viewed relationships as systems of mutual dependence where people weigh potential rewards and costs before deciding to enter or continue a relationship.
Rewards, costs, and the comparison level
Thibaut and Kelley assume that people try to maximize the rewards they obtain from a relationship and minimize the costs – the “minimax” principle. According to social exchange theory, people pursue relationships where rewards outweigh costs and abandon those where costs exceed rewards. Rewards can take many forms – emotional support, companionship, affection – while costs include effort, conflict, time, and emotional energy.
A key concept within this framework is the comparison level (CL) – a personal standard based on past relationships and expectations. We develop a comparison level to judge which person offers the most, shaped by evaluations of our past relationship experiences and expectations; individuals who exceed our comparison level are those we are most likely to want to form a relationship with. Alongside this, the comparison level for alternatives (CLalt) refers to whether a person believes they could do better elsewhere. If the CL is positive, a person may not consider the potential benefits of a relationship with another person.
Limits of the social exchange approach
Social exchange theory has been influential, but it isn’t without criticism. One key weakness is its assumption that reward is the sole motivation of interpersonal attraction – but this is evidently not always true, since some forms of attraction are motivated by selfless love, in which one is drawn to another not out of any expectation of gain, but out of pure affection. This limits the theory’s ability to fully account for altruistic or deeply committed relationships where one partner consistently gives more without resentment.
Equity theory: fairness as the foundation of lasting attraction
Equity theory extends social exchange theory by shifting the focus from sheer profit to perceived fairness. This approach suggests that it is essential to take into account how both parties in a relationship assess the costs and benefits. When each person believes that their own ratio of costs to benefits is fair (equitable), attraction between the two tends to be promoted.
Importantly, inequity cuts both ways. If one partner feels they are contributing significantly more than they are receiving, dissatisfaction grows. But research also shows that the person receiving more than they give can experience guilt or discomfort. Equity theory emphasizes the importance of balance in exchanges for lasting attraction – relationships where both individuals feel their contributions are fairly balanced tend to be stronger and more enduring. This is why relationships can survive difficult periods – as long as both partners perceive the overall exchange as fair over time.
Evolutionary theories of attraction: biology’s role in mate selection
While social exchange and equity theories focus on psychological cost-benefit dynamics, evolutionary psychology takes a different approach – arguing that many of our attraction preferences are deeply rooted in biology. From an evolutionary perspective, attraction functions to direct one’s attention and energy toward pursuing and mating with individuals who display traits that contribute to greater survival and reproductive success.
Natural selection and physical attraction
Evolutionary theories suggest that physical attraction is driven by biological imperatives related to mate selection. Preferences for certain traits – like symmetry and health – signal genetic fitness and enhance reproductive success, as individuals are drawn to partners who exhibit traits associated with fertility and vitality. Facial symmetry, for instance, is widely considered attractive across cultures because it indicates stable development and good genes.
Humans have potentially evolved to be attracted to genetic dissimilarity in the major histocompatibility complex, which is argued to promote greater immunocompetence and pathogen resistance – and hence, health in one’s mate and putative offspring. This suggests that some of our instinctive attraction responses serve a purpose far beyond aesthetics.
Parental investment theory and sex differences in attraction
One of the most widely cited evolutionary frameworks is parental investment theory, which explains why men and women often show different attraction priorities. The theory of parental investment suggests that the sex that invests more in offspring (typically females) will be more selective in choosing mates, while the sex that invests less (typically males) will compete more intensely for mating opportunities.
Research by Furnham and Cuppello (2024), published in Evolutionary Behavioral Sciences, largely confirmed what evolutionary psychology has long suggested. Men tend to prioritize physical attractiveness and health in their partners – indicators of fertility – while women value traits like intelligence, emotional stability, and earning potential, which signal the ability to provide material support. These differences are understood as evolved strategies shaped by the differing reproductive challenges each sex has historically faced.
Research by Buss (1989) found that men preferred to marry women 2.7 years younger, while women preferred men 3.4 years older – a finding that emerged consistently across cultures, lending cross-cultural support to evolutionary predictions about mate preferences.
Sexual selection and signaling
Beyond parental investment, sexual selection theory explains how certain traits evolve specifically because they make individuals more attractive to potential mates. These traits, known as “sexual ornaments,” may not directly enhance survival but can increase an individual’s chances of attracting a mate – examples include physical attractiveness, confidence, and social status. According to the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Psychology, women are theorized to be attracted to masculinity in men as a reliable signal of underlying genetic quality, while men are theorized to be attracted to femininity in women as a signal of reproductive viability.
How these theories complement each other
These theories aren’t competing explanations – they’re complementary ones. Social exchange theory helps explain why a relationship persists or dissolves based on perceived value. Equity theory adds that perceived fairness is what keeps both partners genuinely satisfied. The reinforcement-affect model explains the initial emotional pull. And evolutionary theory anchors many of these preferences in biology, explaining why certain traits feel rewarding to begin with.
Attraction is a two-way process involving not only the person who is attracted but also the attractor, and research suggests that close relationships are the most vital ingredient in a happy and meaningful life. No single theory fully explains why we fall for the people we do – but together, these frameworks provide a rich, multi-layered understanding of one of the most universal human experiences.
Criticisms and limitations across theories
Each theory carries its own blind spots. Social exchange and equity models have been criticized for being too individualistic and culturally specific – their assumptions may apply more strongly in individualist societies where relationships are viewed as personal transactions. Evolutionary theories, meanwhile, have faced criticism for potentially oversimplifying complex human behavior and for relying on sex difference generalizations that don’t capture the full diversity of human attraction. For instance, while traditional evolutionary theories suggest women should highly value wealth, recent research found no significant sex difference in the importance of wealth – which may reflect changing social norms and economic realities. This is an important reminder that biology and culture are always in dialogue.
