Stress is something every person experiences, yet it remains widely misunderstood. Most people think of stress as purely negative – something to eliminate. But the reality is more nuanced. Stress is a fundamental biological and psychological response that, in the right dose, keeps us alert, motivated, and alive. In excess, however, it becomes one of the most damaging forces on human health. Understanding what stress actually is, where it comes from, and how its different forms affect the body and mind is the first step toward managing it effectively.

Defining stress: what it really means
Stress, at its core, is the body’s response to any demand placed upon it – physical, emotional, or environmental. The American Institute of Stress describes it as either “physical, mental, or emotional strain or tension” or a condition experienced when a person perceives that demands exceed their available personal and social resources. The pioneering endocrinologist Hans Selye – widely regarded as the father of stress medicine – defined it as the body’s nonspecific response to any demand, regardless of whether the trigger is pleasant or unpleasant.
This is an important point: stress is not inherently harmful. According to Britannica, stress in psychology and biology is any environmental or physical pressure that elicits a response from an organism, promoting survival by forcing adaptation to changing conditions. The stressor itself is neutral – it is how the body and mind respond to it that determines whether the outcome is beneficial or damaging.
A stressor is any event, person, or situation that triggers the stress response. Stressors can be external (a looming deadline, financial trouble, a conflict) or internal (a persistent negative thought, a health worry, unresolved anger). Research shows that stressors are more likely to harm health when they are chronic, highly disruptive, or perceived as uncontrollable.
The biopsychosocial model of stress
Stress is not just an emotional experience. It operates across three interconnected dimensions. The biological dimension involves how the body physically reacts – hormone release, elevated heart rate, muscle tension. The psychological dimension concerns how the mind processes and appraises the stressor. The social dimension reflects how relationships and the surrounding environment shape the stress response. All three dimensions interact continuously, which is why the same stressor can hit two people in completely different ways.
Not all stress is bad: eustress vs. distress
One of the most important distinctions in understanding stress is between eustress and distress. Selye introduced the term eustress by combining the Greek prefix eu- (meaning “good”) with the word stress. Eustress is the positive cognitive response to stress – the kind that generates a sense of fulfillment, motivation, and excitement. It is short-term, feels manageable, and actually improves performance.
Research confirms that a moderate amount of stress enhances both immediate and delayed recall of educational material, and athletes often perform better when experiencing some pregame stress. The Yerkes-Dodson curve illustrates this well: as stress increases up to an optimal point, so does performance. Beyond that point, stress tips into distress – the negative, debilitating form that leads to fatigue, burnout, and declining health.
Distress, on the other hand, occurs when a stressor cannot be resolved through normal coping. It produces anxiety, withdrawal, and depression, and is what most people mean when they say they are “stressed out.” The key differentiator between eustress and distress is the sense of control – eustress involves a challenge that feels attainable, while distress involves a burden that feels unmanageable.
How anger fuels stress
Stress does not always arise from external pressures alone. Emotions, particularly anger, are a significant internal driver of stress. The two are deeply intertwined. Stress and anger can create a self-perpetuating cycle: stress triggers an anger response, and anger in turn produces further stress, creating a feedback loop that escalates over time if left unaddressed.
From a physiological standpoint, anger activates the same stress pathways in the body. Houston Methodist Hospital explains that in the short term, anger releases catecholamines – neurotransmitters involved in the fight-or-flight response – causing a rapid heart rate, quickened breathing, muscle tension, and flushed skin. When a person is already under chronic stress, their cortisol levels are elevated, which means even a minor trigger can provoke an outsized anger reaction.
Research published in Psychology & Health found that higher levels of anger experience are directly linked to higher levels of stress and lower psychological well-being. Studies in Frontiers in Psychology similarly confirm that trait anger is a strong predictor of psychological symptoms like anxiety, depression, and hostility. In short, chronic anger doesn’t just coexist with stress – it generates and maintains it.
Individuals dealing with financial pressures, relationship difficulties, or heavy workloads often find that their tolerance for frustration shrinks over time, making anger outbursts more frequent. This accumulation of stressors progressively diminishes a person’s capacity to regulate their emotions, turning manageable frustration into full-scale anger – which then feeds back into the stress cycle.
Types of stress and their effects on health
Not all stress is experienced the same way. Psychologists and medical researchers identify several distinct types, each with its own profile of causes, duration, and health consequences.
Acute stress
MedlinePlus describes acute stress as short-term stress that resolves quickly – the kind felt when slamming on the brakes, having a disagreement, or facing a sudden challenge. It helps the body manage dangerous or demanding situations and is experienced by everyone at some point. Physiologically, acute stress triggers the fight-or-flight response, causing temporary increases in heart rate, adrenaline release, blood pressure, and heightened mental alertness. Once the stressor passes, these changes resolve, and the body returns to equilibrium. Acute stress is not dangerous on its own and can even be beneficial when it sharpens focus and drives action.
Episodic acute stress
When a person experiences acute stress repeatedly – constantly facing deadlines, conflicts, or crises – it becomes episodic acute stress. Cleveland Clinic notes that people dealing with episodic acute stress never get enough recovery time to return to a calm, relaxed state. It is common among healthcare workers, caregivers, and people with highly demanding or chaotic lifestyles. Over time, this pattern wears down the body’s regulatory systems and increases the risk of burnout.
Chronic stress
Chronic stress is where the most serious health consequences emerge. Yale Medicine defines it as a consistent sense of feeling pressured and overwhelmed over an extended period – weeks, months, or even years. Sources include poverty, unhappy relationships, persistent job dissatisfaction, and long-term illness. The insidious aspect of chronic stress is that people often become so accustomed to it that they stop recognizing it as stress at all.
The health toll is substantial. Chronic stress can lead to hyperglycemia, hypertension, depression, anxiety, weakened immune function, and weight gain. At the neurological level, chronic stress inhibits neuron growth in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex – regions involved in memory and decision-making – while promoting hypertrophy in the amygdala, the brain’s fear and anxiety center. This neurological shift is why people under prolonged stress often struggle with memory, concentration, and emotional regulation.
A review published in PMC links cumulative chronic stress to an increased probability of heart disease, hypertension, addiction, anxiety disorders, depression, PTSD, and even Alzheimer’s disease. Chronic stress also weakens the body’s immune defenses, reducing antibody production and making individuals more susceptible to infection and illness.
Traumatic stress
Traumatic stress is characterized by life-threatening events – natural disasters, war, serious accidents – that evoke intense fear and helplessness. When traumatic stress is not adequately processed, it can develop into post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a condition where the stress response becomes locked in a state of chronic activation long after the original threat has passed. PTSD is also notably associated with heightened anger – the body remains in a state of elevated arousal, making anger outbursts significantly more likely.
The body’s stress response: what happens inside
Whether the stressor is a physical threat or an emotional one, the body responds through the same core mechanism. The brain perceives the threat and activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, triggering the release of stress hormones – primarily cortisol and adrenaline (epinephrine). These hormones increase heart rate, redirect blood to muscles, raise blood glucose, and sharpen alertness. This is an efficient, life-saving response in the short term.
The problem arises when this response is never switched off. Chronic activation of the HPA axis leads to sustained elevated cortisol and epinephrine, which promotes oxidative stress, inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction – all of which contribute to cardiovascular disease. As McEwen and Stellar (1993) argued, there is a hidden cost to the body from chronic stress – a concept now known as allostatic load, referring to the cumulative wear and tear on the body caused by repeated or prolonged stress responses.
Why understanding stress matters
Stress is not a character flaw or a sign of weakness – it is a universal human experience rooted in biology. Recognizing the difference between eustress and distress, understanding how anger can escalate the stress cycle, and identifying whether stress is acute or chronic all have direct, practical consequences for health and well-being. When chronic stress goes unaddressed, it doesn’t just affect mood – it accelerates the development of serious physical and mental health conditions. The good news is that stress is manageable. Exercise, therapy, social support, mindfulness, and environmental changes all have well-documented effects on reducing its impact.
