That process of understanding is driven by psychological testing and assessment: a systematic, evidence-based approach to gathering data about who a person is, how their mind works, and what might be going wrong. Though the frequency of formal testing has shifted since its peak in the mid-20th century, it remains one of the most powerful tools in clinical psychology.

What psychological testing actually means
Psychological testing and assessment are often used interchangeably, but they refer to slightly different things. Why clinical psychology still depends on testing
Although the use of large test batteries has become less common since the 1980s – partly due to managed care restrictions and evolving models of psychopathology – formal testing has not disappeared from clinical practice. It has adapted. Core components of a clinical assessment
The clinical interview

For children aged 6-16, the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC) is used, and for younger children, the WPPSI applies.
Wechsler defined intelligence as the global capacity to act purposefully, think rationally, and deal effectively with the environment. His scales were groundbreaking because they introduced a performance scale – requiring subjects to actively do something physical, like copying symbols or identifying missing details – alongside verbal tasks. This helped overcome cultural and linguistic biases that had plagued earlier tests like the Binet scales.

Who conducts psychological assessments?
