When a child struggles to read, the instinct is often to work harder – more practice, more repetition. But before any effective intervention can happen, educators and specialists need a clear picture of where the difficulty lies. Is it decoding? Comprehension? Fluency? Or a combination? Reading assessment answers these questions. For children with learning disabilities, a well-structured assessment isn’t just a diagnostic step – it’s the foundation of every instructional decision that follows.

Why reading assessment matters for learning disabilities
Reading is not a single skill. It involves phonological awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension – all working together. When any one of these areas breaks down, the impact can ripple across a child’s entire academic experience. Research consistently shows that early, accurate identification of reading difficulties leads to better long-term outcomes, especially when intervention starts in kindergarten through Grade 3. The challenge for educators is knowing which assessment tool to use, and when.
Reading assessments are broadly divided into two categories: informal and formal. Each has a distinct role, and the most effective evaluations use both together to build a complete picture of where a student is struggling – and why.
Informal assessment tools
Informal assessments are less structured than standardized tests. They are typically administered by classroom teachers as part of ongoing instruction and are particularly valuable for identifying specific skill gaps at the classroom level. They offer immediate, actionable data without the delays associated with formal testing referrals.
Ekwall Reading Inventory
One of the most widely used informal tools in reading assessment is the Ekwall/Shanker Reading Inventory (ESRI). According to ERIC, the inventory covers reading passages from preprimer through ninth-grade level and includes instruments for assessing phonics, basic sight words, vowel rules, syllable principles, and contractions. Its oral and silent reading passages are designed to identify a student’s independent, instructional, and frustration reading levels.
The ESRI features 40 diagnostic subtests covering nine reading areas: oral and silent reading, listening comprehension, phonemic awareness, letter knowledge, basic sight vocabulary, phonics, structural analysis, context clues, and reading fluency. For students with learning disabilities, this breadth is critical. A child may decode individual words correctly but fail at comprehension – or show strong comprehension of heard material but struggle badly when reading independently. The ESRI helps educators tease these differences apart.
A key strength of the ESRI is that it helps determine an appropriate instructional level – the zone where a student is challenged just enough without being pushed into frustration. This directly shapes decisions about grouping students and selecting reading materials.

Gates-McKillop Reading Diagnostic Tests
The Gates-McKillop Reading Diagnostic Tests are among the historically significant individually administered diagnostic tools for reading. As referenced in a review of nine diagnostic reading instruments, the Gates-McKillop tests were designed to assess specific components of the reading process in depth, including word analysis skills, phonics knowledge, and recognition of word families. What makes the Durrell Analysis particularly useful for students with learning disabilities is its granularity – it doesn’t just flag that a student is struggling, it maps out exactly which components of reading are breaking down and where in the reading process the difficulties emerge. Comparing performance across subtests allows evaluators to identify specific processing deficits rather than just a general reading level.
Error analysis: reading the patterns behind mistakes
Beyond test scores, one of the most clinically valuable techniques in reading assessment is error analysis – also called miscue analysis. When a student reads aloud, every deviation from the text is recorded and then examined for patterns. It is not just about counting mistakes. It is about understanding what those mistakes reveal about a student’s reading processes.
Types of reading errors
Errors in oral reading typically fall into several categories, each pointing to different underlying difficulties:
- Omissions: The student skips a word entirely. Frequent omissions may suggest the student is overwhelmed by text complexity, avoiding unfamiliar words, or struggling with fluency to the point where some words are dropped to maintain pace.
- Substitutions: The student replaces a word with another (e.g., reading “house” as “home”). Substitutions are particularly informative. If the substituted word is semantically similar (same meaning), the student may be prioritizing comprehension over decoding accuracy. If it is visually similar (same first letter or shape), the student may be using a partial visual strategy rather than full phonological decoding.
- Insertions: The student adds a word not present in the text, often a function word. This can indicate over-reliance on syntactic prediction.
- Reversals: Letters or words are read in a different order (e.g., “was” read as “saw”). Reversals are common in early reading development and in students with dyslexia.
- Repetitions: The student rereads a word or phrase. Repetitions often signal that the student is self-monitoring – they sensed something was wrong and went back. This is actually a positive metacognitive sign.
- Self-corrections: The student catches and corrects their own error. High self-correction rates indicate active comprehension monitoring.
How error patterns guide intervention
The power of error analysis is that it transforms raw mistakes into an instructional roadmap. As the Kentucky Department of Education notes, diagnostic assessments help identify specific skill deficits to guide the next steps for instruction and intervention. Error patterns do exactly this – they show not just that a student is struggling, but how they are processing text.
A student whose errors are primarily semantic substitutions (replacing words with similarly-meaning alternatives) likely has adequate comprehension drive but weak phonological decoding. The intervention here focuses on phonics and word recognition. A student whose errors are primarily omissions with no self-correction may not be monitoring for meaning at all – pointing toward metacognitive and comprehension strategy training rather than phonics work.
Many formal assessments, including the WRMT-III, incorporate item-level error analysis as a built-in feature. Running records – where a teacher marks every deviation during oral reading in real time – are the most common informal method. Both approaches serve the same core purpose: ensuring that intervention is precisely matched to the nature of the reading difficulty, not just its severity.
Putting it all together: from assessment to action
No single test tells the full story. Over 50 years of research confirms that the most effective approach combines multiple assessment tools – informal and formal – alongside systematic error analysis. The Ekwall inventory and cloze tests provide the teacher with immediate, classroom-based insight. Standardized tools like the WRMT and Durrell Analysis offer norm-referenced comparisons and detailed subtest profiles. Error analysis bridges both, turning observed reading behavior into specific intervention targets.
The goal of this layered approach is not to label a student, but to understand them well enough to teach them effectively. When assessment is thorough and carefully interpreted, it stops being a judgment and becomes a plan.
