Not all workplace accidents happen by chance. Research has long suggested that a small proportion of workers account for a disproportionately large share of accidents – not because they are unlucky, but because of identifiable psychological and behavioral characteristics. This idea, known as accident proneness, challenges the assumption that accidents are random events that can happen equally to anyone. Understanding what makes certain individuals more susceptible, and what can be done about it, is one of the most practical questions in occupational psychology.

What is accident proneness?

Accident proneness is the concept that certain individuals have a consistently higher likelihood of being involved in accidents due to specific, persistent characteristics – rather than bad luck or external circumstances alone. The term was formally coined in 1926, independently and simultaneously, by psychologists Eric Farmer and E.G. Chambers in Britain and Karl Marbe in Germany, who used the term Unfallneigung (inclination to accident). Early observations in insurance and transport data had already hinted at what researchers would later confirm: in some companies, half of all accidents were attributable to just one-fifth of workers.

Initially, accident proneness was viewed as a fixed, unchangeable trait. More recent research has refined this picture considerably. Later studies established that accident proneness is shaped by transient factors such as psychological stress, individual socio-psychological makeup, safety culture, and work environment – and that a person’s accident proneness can actually change over time. This shift moved the concept from a fatalistic label into a more actionable framework for workplace safety.

The psychological makeup behind accident proneness

Accident proneness is not simply about carelessness. It is deeply connected to an individual’s psychological profile – particularly their personality traits, cognitive functioning, and emotional state.

Personality traits

A substantial body of research links specific personality traits to elevated accident risk. A comprehensive review of personality and accident research concluded that traits including extroversion, impulsivity, aggression, social maladjustment, locus of control, and certain aspects of neuroticism are consistently associated with accident involvement. More recent meta-analytic work using the Big Five personality model has built on this. Research published in the field of occupational psychology found that employees higher in neuroticism and extroversion were more likely to engage in unsafe behavior – neurotic individuals due to anxiety-driven distraction and impulsive anger, and highly extraverted individuals due to sensation-seeking and a tendency to prioritize getting ahead over following procedure.

On the other side of the equation, workers who score high in conscientiousness – meaning they are organized, careful, and rule-following – show significantly lower vulnerability to accidents. Conscientious workers tend to allocate more attention to hazardous environments, engage in forward planning, and are less likely to cut corners under pressure.

Low conscientiousness, by contrast, is associated with ignoring safety rules, poor attention to risk, and higher accident rates. Extreme introversion also carries some risk – introverts may hesitate to ask for help in dangerous situations, which can compound hazards.

Cognitive failures and stress

One of the most robust findings in accident proneness research concerns the role of cognitive failures – everyday lapses in attention, memory, and action. A study drawing on Royal Navy databases found that individuals involved in workplace accidents had significantly higher scores on both a general stress questionnaire and a cognitive failures questionnaire compared to matched controls. Crucially, stress did not predict accidents directly – it did so by increasing the frequency of cognitive failures. In other words, psychological stress leads to attention lapses and decision errors, which in turn raise accident risk.

A cross-sectional study of industrial workers further confirmed that psychosocial risk factors at work – including work-family conflict and poor supervisor support – increase accident proneness, which then elevates the likelihood of cognitive failures. Work-family conflict and lack of supervisor support emerged as the strongest predictors of cognitive failure, underscoring that accident proneness is not purely an individual issue but is also shaped by organizational conditions.

Locus of control and risk sensitivity

Another psychological factor relevant to accident proneness is locus of control – the degree to which a person believes they have control over outcomes in their life. Workers with an external locus of control (those who attribute outcomes to luck or external forces) tend to be less vigilant about safety, as they do not feel that their own actions significantly influence whether accidents occur. Research in the construction industry found that locus of control, detectable through behavioral monitoring with wearable sensors, was a meaningful predictor of risk-taking behavior around hazards.

Identifying accident-prone individuals in the workplace

Identifying who may be at heightened risk is a sensitive but necessary step in targeted accident prevention. Several approaches exist.

Behavioral observation

Systematic observation of day-to-day work behavior can reveal patterns associated with elevated accident risk. Workers who routinely skip safety protocols, rush through tasks, appear distracted near machinery, or regularly bypass protective equipment demonstrate behavioral markers that warrant closer attention. This is not about surveillance for its own sake – it is about identifying individuals who may benefit from additional support before an accident occurs.

Psychological and personality assessments

Structured personality assessments – particularly those measuring the Big Five traits – can help organizations understand which employees may be at greater risk and tailor safety interventions accordingly. Research on construction workers confirmed that assessing personality traits is a useful tool for designing customized safety interventions, since different personality types respond to different motivational approaches. For instance, conscientious workers tend to be intrinsically motivated by safety, while extraverted workers may respond better to external recognition systems.

Safety-specific performance assessments can also be used at the hiring stage to identify applicants whose personality profiles are associated with lower accident risk, allowing organizations to build safer teams proactively rather than reactively.

Accident history and health data

Reviewing an employee’s accident history is one of the simplest indicators. Research has shown that individuals prone to injury at work are often also prone to injury at home and during leisure activities – suggesting that accident proneness is a genuine cross-situational tendency, not simply a product of one particular job environment. Tracking patterns across contexts helps distinguish truly accident-prone individuals from those involved in isolated, situationally-specific incidents.

Interventions: reducing accident proneness in practice

The good news is that accident proneness, especially in its stress- and cognition-related dimensions, is modifiable. A range of targeted interventions can meaningfully reduce risk.

Behavioral safety training

Behavioral training programs teach workers to recognize and interrupt risky behavioral patterns. These programs work best when they go beyond generic safety reminders to directly address the specific behavioral tendencies – such as impulsivity or distraction – that elevate an individual’s accident risk. A systematic review of workplace safety interventions found that interventions grounded in clear theoretical frameworks and targeting specific hazards were substantially more effective than broad, non-targeted training approaches. Generic safety campaigns, by contrast, tend to produce more modest results.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)

CBT is well-established as a tool for changing the thought patterns that drive risky or impulsive behavior. In an occupational context, it helps employees challenge overconfidence, manage impulsive reactions, and develop more deliberate decision-making habits. A meta-analysis of occupational stress management programs found that CBT-based interventions consistently produced the largest improvements in psychological outcomes compared to other approaches. Given the link between stress, cognitive failure, and accidents, reducing psychological distress through CBT is directly relevant to accident prevention.

Stress management programs

Since stress is a significant driver of cognitive failures that lead to accidents, stress reduction is an important lever for safety. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has long recognized job stress as a serious occupational hazard, and recommends organizational-level changes – such as clearer role definitions, better workload management, and stronger supervisory support – as primary prevention strategies. At the individual level, research on stress management in work settings found that combined interventions – such as pairing cognitive-behavioral skill-building with relaxation techniques – produced more consistent results across outcome measures than any single technique alone. Mindfulness-based programs have also demonstrated effectiveness in reducing burnout, anxiety, and stress in workplace settings.

Organizational-level changes

Individual interventions alone are not sufficient. Evidence consistently shows that occupational safety interventions directed at the group or organizational level – such as engineering controls, safety culture improvements, and leadership commitment – are more effective at reducing accidents than individual-focused efforts alone. Supervisor support, in particular, has been shown to be one of the most powerful buffers against the psychosocial conditions that drive accident proneness. Ensuring that workers feel respected, fairly treated, and adequately supported significantly lowers the psychological risk load that contributes to accidents.

A note on fairness and ethics

It is worth acknowledging that the concept of accident proneness has historically been misused – as a way to place blame entirely on workers while ignoring systemic failures in equipment design, management practice, or safety culture. Modern occupational psychology treats accident proneness as one contributing factor within a broader system of risk. Research consistently emphasizes that even high-risk personality profiles can be effectively managed through appropriate task allocation, supportive supervision, and targeted skills development – not dismissal or stigmatization. The goal is prevention and support, not labeling.
