Every day, without fully realizing it, your behavior is being shaped by the people around you, the setting you’re in, and the roles you occupy. You speak differently with your boss than with your friends. You follow instructions you might privately question. You go along with a group decision even when your instinct says otherwise. This is social interaction at work – a continuous, often invisible exchange of influence that operates in every corner of human life. Understanding how and why this happens is one of the most revealing questions in psychology.

What social interaction really involves
At its core, social interaction refers to any process in which people act and react to one another in their environment. But it’s far more than just conversation or cooperation. According to social psychology, behavior is shaped by both the situation – cultural influences, social roles, the presence of others – and the individual’s internal characteristics, such as personality and values. Neither factor works in isolation; they interact constantly.
Several core elements define any social interaction. These include the characteristics of the participants (who they are, their personality, their status), the nature of the task or situation at hand, and the environment in which the interaction takes place. Change any one of these variables, and behavior can shift dramatically – sometimes in ways people don’t anticipate or even recognize in themselves.
The role of the environment
Physical surroundings exert a quiet but real influence on how people behave. Research in social psychology has found that group size, the ambiguity of a situation, and even the proximity to an authority figure can all amplify social influence. Larger groups tend to exert greater pressure for conformity, especially when their opinions appear unanimous. The ambiguity of a situation makes people more likely to look to others for behavioral cues, increasing susceptibility to informational influence.
Environmental setting also changes how much people defer to authority. Studies show that when an authority figure operates from a prestigious institution, compliance tends to be higher than when the same instruction comes from a less recognized setting. The environment, in other words, lends legitimacy – and legitimacy shapes obedience.
Group norms and their power over individual behavior
Social norms are the implicit, unwritten rules that govern behavior within a group. According to research published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B, the internalization of social norms and social identity are two complementary processes that both shape how people follow group rules. We don’t just follow norms because we’re forced to – over time, we absorb them as part of who we are.
These norms are powerful precisely because they’re often invisible. Social norms organize behavior and reduce conflict within groups by specifying the kinds of responses expected in particular situations. In a workplace, there are norms about communication style, punctuality, and professionalism. In a social circle, norms regulate how disputes are handled, what humor is acceptable, and who has informal authority. When someone deviates from these norms, they risk social disapproval – a powerful motivator that keeps most people in line, even when the norm itself may be questionable.
Normative vs. informational influence
There are two distinct mechanisms through which groups push individuals toward conformity. Normative social influence occurs when a person changes their behavior to gain acceptance or avoid rejection – they conform to fit in, not because they’re convinced the group is correct. Informational social influence, by contrast, happens when people look to the group for guidance in uncertain situations, genuinely believing the group may know better. Both forms operate constantly, often simultaneously, and together explain a great deal of everyday conformity.
Milgram’s obedience experiment: authority in action
One of the most consequential demonstrations of social influence in psychology came from Stanley Milgram at Yale University in the early 1960s. His goal was direct: to understand how ordinary people could participate in atrocities under the direction of authority figures, inspired by the trial of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann. What he found changed the field permanently.
In the experiment, participants – recruited as “teachers” in what they were told was a learning study – were instructed by an authority figure to administer electric shocks to another person (actually an actor) each time the person gave a wrong answer. The shocks were fake, but the participants didn’t know that. The voltage increased with each wrong answer, and the actor responded with escalating protests and cries of pain.
The results were staggering: a substantial majority of participants continued administering shocks up to dangerous levels simply because an authority figure told them to continue. Around 62.5% of participants progressed to the maximum 450 volts – a rate that exceeded by a factor of 500 what psychiatrists predicted when shown the study design in advance. This was not a group of unusual or cruel people. These were ordinary individuals, simply deferring to perceived authority.
What variations revealed
Milgram ran over 20 variations of the experiment, each testing a specific situational factor. When participants could choose their own voltage levels without instruction, only about 2.5% chose the maximum – confirming that the authority figure’s presence was the critical driver of compliance, not personal cruelty. When peers were present and refused to continue, obedience dropped significantly. When the learner was visible and in the same room, obedience also decreased. External pressures from a legitimate authority, Milgram concluded, can make people act in ways they would never consider on their own.
The findings proved remarkably consistent across time and geography. Obedience rates in the United States averaged around 61%, while the rate in foreign replications averaged 66% – suggesting that this is not a cultural anomaly but a broadly human response to authority structures. A 2006 partial replication by psychologist Jerry Burger, conducted under stricter ethical controls, found similar results, with approximately 67% of male participants and 73% of female participants continuing up to the permissible stopping point.
Asch’s conformity experiment: the pressure of the group
While Milgram explored obedience to authority, Solomon Asch in the 1950s investigated a different but equally powerful force: conformity to group consensus. His question was simple – would people deny the clear evidence of their own senses to align with a group that was obviously wrong?
Asch designed a straightforward visual task: participants were shown a reference line and asked to identify which of three comparison lines matched it in length. The correct answer was unambiguous. But each participant was placed in a room with several confederates – actors posing as fellow participants – who had been instructed to give the same wrong answer aloud before the real participant responded.
About 36.8% of actual participants conformed to the incorrect group consensus, despite knowing the answers were wrong. More broadly, approximately 75% of participants conformed to the incorrect majority at least once across all trials. In the control condition – where participants answered privately with no group present – the error rate was less than 1%.
Why people conformed
Post-experiment interviews revealed that the majority of participants who yielded to the group did not actually believe the group’s answers were correct. They conformed to avoid standing out, being ridiculed, or seeming foolish. This is normative social influence in its clearest form – prioritizing social acceptance over accurate judgment. A smaller number, however, genuinely began to doubt their own perception, indicating informational influence at work as well.
Critically, when at least one other person gave the correct answer, conformity rates dropped dramatically, highlighting how even a single dissenting voice can significantly reduce group pressure. This finding carries real implications: social support matters. The presence of just one ally can free people to trust their own judgment.
What both experiments tell us about social interaction
Together, Milgram’s and Asch’s experiments reveal a consistent and somewhat unsettling truth: the social situation is a more powerful driver of behavior than most people assume. The Milgram experiment demonstrated that behavior tends to be controlled more by the demands of the situation than by idiosyncratic traits of the person. We are not simply autonomous agents making free choices – we are social creatures whose decisions are deeply entangled with the context we’re in, the authority structures present, and the behavioral signals of those around us.
This does not mean individuals are helpless. Both experiments also showed resistance: roughly a third of Milgram’s participants refused at some point, and about a quarter of Asch’s participants never conformed at all. Asch concluded that while group pressure can powerfully distort individual judgment, the capacity for independence is real and not negligible. Critical awareness, social support, and the presence of dissenting voices all reduce susceptibility to these forces.
The broader picture: social interaction as mutual influence
Social interaction is not a one-way street where individuals are passively shaped by external forces. Every person in any social exchange is simultaneously an influencer and someone being influenced. Social learning theory confirms that people acquire new behaviors by observing and imitating others, particularly those perceived as having authority or social standing. This dynamic is continuous – norms are created, reinforced, challenged, and modified through ongoing interaction.
Social roles, too, shape behavior significantly. The same person may be relaxed and humorous at a family gathering and disciplined and formal at work – not because they’re being inauthentic, but because different social roles carry different behavioral expectations. Identity itself, in this sense, is partly socially constructed through the roles we inhabit and the norms of the groups we belong to.
Understanding these dynamics doesn’t just serve academic curiosity. It matters for how workplaces function, how decisions get made in groups, how people resist harmful authority, and how cultures shift over time. When we recognize that our behavior is being shaped by social forces, we gain at least some power to critically evaluate those forces rather than simply absorbing them.
