Every time your phone buzzes with a notification and you feel a small rush of excitement, or every time a child stops throwing tantrums because they’ve learned it leads to losing screen time – conditioning is at work. Behaviouristic theories of human development explain how our environment shapes who we become, not through genetics or internal thoughts, but through learned associations and consequences. Two psychologists stand at the centre of this approach: Ivan Pavlov and B.F. Skinner. Their work redefined how we understand learning, habit formation, and behavioural change across the lifespan.

What is behaviourism?

Behaviourism is a school of psychology that focuses exclusively on observable, measurable behaviour. It rejects the study of internal mental states – thoughts, feelings, motivations – and instead argues that all behaviour is a product of interactions with the environment. The core claim is straightforward: behaviour is learned, and it is learned through conditioning.

The behaviourist movement gained momentum in the early 20th century. John B. Watson formally established behaviorism in 1913, arguing that psychology should concern itself only with observable stimulus-response behaviours that can be studied systematically. Watson believed that people’s reactions were shaped entirely by experience rather than by heredity or unconscious processes. This was a radical departure from the Freudian theories that dominated psychology at the time.

Within this framework, two types of conditioning emerged as the primary mechanisms of learning: classical conditioning and operant conditioning. Each offers a different explanation for how behaviours are acquired and maintained.

Ivan Pavlov and classical conditioning

Ivan Pavlov (1849-1936) was a Russian physiologist who stumbled upon one of psychology’s most influential discoveries by accident. While researching digestion in dogs, Pavlov noticed that the animals began salivating not just when food was presented, but in response to cues associated with feeding – like the footsteps of the lab assistant who brought the food. This observation led Pavlov to investigate how organisms learn through association, ultimately giving rise to the theory of classical conditioning.

How classical conditioning works

Classical conditioning occurs when a neutral stimulus becomes associated with a stimulus that naturally triggers a behavioural response. After repeated pairings, the previously neutral stimulus alone is enough to produce that response.

To understand the process, it helps to know these key terms:

Unconditioned stimulus (US) – a stimulus that naturally and automatically triggers a response. In Pavlov’s experiments, this was food. Unconditioned response (UR) – the natural, unlearned reaction to the US. For the dogs, this was salivation at the sight of food. Conditioned stimulus (CS) – a previously neutral stimulus that, after being paired with the US, begins to trigger a response on its own. This was the sound of the bell (or metronome). Conditioned response (CR) – the learned response to the conditioned stimulus. The dogs salivated at the sound of the bell alone, even without food.

Pavlov demonstrated this by ringing a bell each time his dogs were fed. After several repetitions, the dogs salivated at the sound of the bell even when no food was present. The neutral stimulus (bell) had become a conditioned stimulus capable of producing a conditioned response (salivation).

Key phenomena in classical conditioning

Pavlov identified several important processes that govern how conditioned responses develop and change over time:

Acquisition refers to the initial learning phase when the neutral stimulus is being paired with the unconditioned stimulus. Pavlov found that the speed of acquisition depended on the prominence of the stimulus and the timing between the neutral stimulus and the unconditioned stimulus.

Extinction occurs when the conditioned stimulus is repeatedly presented without the unconditioned stimulus. If Pavlov rang the bell without ever providing food, the dogs gradually stopped salivating in response to the bell. The conditioned response weakens and eventually disappears.

Spontaneous recovery is the reappearance of an extinguished conditioned response after a rest period. Even after the conditioned response had faded, it could return if the conditioned and unconditioned stimuli were paired again after some time had passed.

Stimulus generalisation happens when the conditioned response is triggered not just by the original CS, but by similar stimuli. Stimulus discrimination is the opposite – the organism learns to respond only to the specific conditioned stimulus and not to similar ones.

The Little Albert experiment

The most well-known application of classical conditioning to human behaviour came from John B. Watson and Rosalie Rayner in 1920. They conditioned a 9-month-old infant, known as “Little Albert,” to fear a white rat. Watson did this by producing loud clanging noises whenever the white rat was brought near the infant. Within a few weeks, Albert showed fear at the sight of the rat alone. Albert also began to show fear toward other white, furry objects – a clear case of stimulus generalisation. This experiment, though ethically controversial, demonstrated that emotional responses like fear could be learned through classical conditioning in humans.

Applications of classical conditioning in human development

Classical conditioning plays a significant role in how children and adults develop emotional and behavioural responses throughout life. In early childhood, Pavlov’s principles help explain how children form emotional associations – for instance, a child may develop a fear of doctors if early medical experiences are paired with pain or discomfort.

Clinical psychologists use classical conditioning to explain how phobias develop. A neutral event, such as driving a car, may become associated with a panic attack, causing the person to develop a lasting fear of driving. Therapeutic techniques like systematic desensitisation are based on classical conditioning and help individuals gradually overcome such fears through controlled exposure.

Classical conditioning is also widely used in advertising, where products are paired with pleasant stimuli – like appealing imagery or popular music – to create positive emotional associations in consumers.

B.F. Skinner and operant conditioning

While Pavlov focused on involuntary, reflexive responses, American psychologist B.F. Skinner (1904-1990) was interested in voluntary behaviours and how they are influenced by their consequences. Skinner argued that classical conditioning was limited to existing reflexive behaviours and could not account for the learning of entirely new actions, such as riding a bicycle or solving a problem.

Skinner developed the theory of operant conditioning, which holds that behaviour is shaped by what happens after it occurs. The core idea is that behaviours followed by rewarding consequences are more likely to be repeated, while behaviours followed by unpleasant consequences tend to decrease. This builds on Edward Thorndike’s earlier law of effect, which stated that responses producing satisfying outcomes are strengthened and those producing discomfort are weakened.

The Skinner box

To study operant conditioning under controlled conditions, Skinner developed the operant conditioning chamber, commonly known as the Skinner box. This device allowed researchers to carefully study how reinforcement and punishment modify behaviour. It contained a bar or lever that an animal could press, and the box could deliver food, a shock, or other stimuli based on the animal’s actions.

Using this apparatus, Skinner observed that rats and pigeons quickly learned which behaviours produced food and which ones led to unpleasant outcomes. These findings formed the foundation of operant conditioning principles.

Reinforcement: increasing behaviour

In operant conditioning, the terms “positive” and “negative” do not mean good and bad. Instead, positive means adding something, and negative means removing something. Reinforcement always increases the likelihood of a behaviour.

Positive reinforcement involves adding a desirable stimulus after a behaviour to make it more likely to happen again. A child receives praise for completing homework, and this encourages them to keep doing it. A rat presses a lever and receives a food pellet, so it presses the lever more often.

Negative reinforcement involves removing an unpleasant stimulus after a behaviour, which also increases that behaviour. An alarm clock is a common example – you wake up and turn it off to escape the buzzing sound, and this reinforces the behaviour of getting up on time. A child who completes chores to avoid being grounded is also experiencing negative reinforcement.

Punishment: decreasing behaviour

While reinforcement strengthens behaviour, punishment works to reduce or suppress it.

Positive punishment adds an unpleasant consequence after an undesired behaviour. For example, scolding a student who is texting in class adds an unpleasant stimulus – the reprimand – which aims to decrease the texting behaviour.

Negative punishment removes something pleasant after an undesired behaviour. When a child misbehaves and a parent takes away a favourite toy, the removal of the pleasant stimulus serves to decrease the unwanted behaviour.

It is worth noting that punishment tends to produce only temporary changes in behaviour because it relies on coercion and can create a negative relationship between the person administering it and the person receiving it. Once the punishing authority is absent, the unwanted behaviour often returns. This is why modern psychologists and educators generally recommend reinforcement over punishment as a more effective strategy for lasting behavioural change.

Shaping: building complex behaviours step by step

One of Skinner’s key contributions was the concept of shaping, also called the method of successive approximations. Rather than waiting for an organism to spontaneously perform a complex behaviour, shaping involves reinforcing behaviours that progressively come closer to the desired action. Each small step toward the target behaviour is rewarded until the full behaviour is achieved.

This technique is used extensively in animal training – for example, teaching a dolphin to jump through a hoop – and in educational settings, where children are guided through increasingly complex tasks with encouragement at each stage.

Comparing classical and operant conditioning

While both classical and operant conditioning explain how learning occurs through environmental interaction, they differ in important ways. Pavlov’s classical conditioning focuses on involuntary, automatic responses that arise through association, whereas Skinner’s operant conditioning centres on voluntary behaviours that are shaped through rewards and punishments.

In classical conditioning, the learner is passive – a response is triggered by a stimulus pairing they have no control over. In operant conditioning, the learner is active – they perform behaviours and then experience consequences that influence future actions. Both mechanisms, however, share the fundamental behaviourist assumption that the environment, rather than internal mental processes, drives learning and development.

Behaviourism in everyday life and child development

The principles of behaviouristic theories show up in countless aspects of daily life and are especially relevant in child-rearing and education.

Parents and teachers frequently use behaviour modification strategies based on operant conditioning. For instance, sticker charts and token economies reward children for desired behaviours, and after accumulating enough tokens, the child earns a prize. This approach reinforces positive behaviours like following instructions, completing tasks, or showing kindness to peers.

Classical conditioning, meanwhile, helps explain why a child who had a negative experience at the dentist might feel anxious every time they see a dental office, or why the sound of an ice cream truck triggers excitement. These automatic emotional responses develop through repeated associations between stimuli and experiences.

Both Pavlov’s and Skinner’s theories emphasise the critical role educators play in creating environments that reinforce positive behaviours and minimise negative ones. Effective classrooms provide clear expectations, consistent feedback, and meaningful rewards to encourage learning and appropriate behaviour.

Criticisms and limitations of behaviouristic theories

Despite their enormous influence, behaviouristic theories have faced significant criticism. One of the major criticisms is that behaviourism ignores internal cognitive processes like thinking, memory, and problem-solving, all of which clearly play a role in learning.

The behaviourist approach has also been criticised for its inability to explain learning that occurs without any obvious environmental input. Children, for instance, learn many things simply by observing others – a phenomenon that Albert Bandura later addressed with his social learning theory. Noam Chomsky also challenged behaviourism by arguing that language acquisition cannot be fully explained through reinforcement alone, pointing to innate linguistic capacities in humans.

Additionally, research has demonstrated that the principles of conditioning are not universal – the relationship between stimulus and response is not always a simple, direct cause-and-effect link, and factors beyond the stimulus play a role in determining how an organism responds.

Still, behaviouristic theories remain foundational in psychology. Behavioural principles have been successfully applied across many real-world settings, including clinical therapy, educational interventions, and organisational behaviour management. Techniques like behaviour modification, token economies, and reinforcement schedules continue to be widely used tools for promoting positive behavioural change.

The lasting legacy of Pavlov and Skinner

Behaviouristic theories transformed our understanding of human development by placing the spotlight on the environment as the primary driver of behaviour. Pavlov showed that automatic responses can be shaped through association. Skinner demonstrated that voluntary behaviour is governed by its consequences. Together, their work established a scientific, evidence-based approach to studying behaviour that has influenced fields ranging from education and parenting to therapy and workplace management.

While modern psychology has moved toward more integrative models that combine behaviourist principles with cognitive and social perspectives, the core insights of conditioning remain as relevant as ever. Every time a teacher uses a reward chart, a therapist applies desensitisation, or a parent sets consistent consequences for a child’s behaviour, the legacy of Pavlov and Skinner is at work.
