When Eastern contemplative practices were introduced to the Western world, this Latin term was applied to them – even though the Eastern traditions carry a richer, more technical meaning than simple reflection. As the meaning evolved, meditation came to describe the deliberate exercise of focusing and training attention, rather than just thinking through a problem. Today, the two meanings coexist: meditation can refer to deep reflection, but in psychology and contemplative practice, it more specifically means the sustained direction of awareness toward inner experience.
How modern psychology defines meditation
Psychologists describe meditation as a mental exercise that trains attention and awareness. Its core purpose is to curb reactivity to negative thoughts and feelings – the mental chatter that hijacks focus from moment to moment. The U.S. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health defines it as a variety of practices that integrate mind and body to calm the mind and enhance overall well-being. Despite the many definitions across disciplines, most converge on a few shared features: self-directed focus, reduced mental reactivity, and a state of inner quiet.
According to Wikipedia’s overview of meditation research, in modern psychological literature, meditation is defined as a practice in which an individual uses a technique to train attention and awareness, achieving a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state – without judging the meditation process itself. This non-judgmental quality is important. You’re not trying to force the mind into silence; you’re training yourself to observe mental activity without getting caught up in it.
Two fundamental approaches
Across traditions and research frameworks, meditation techniques fall into two broad categories: focused attention and open monitoring.
Focused attention meditation
In focused attention (also called concentrative) meditation, the practitioner directs awareness to a single object – the breath, a mantra, a candle flame, or a specific mental image. The practice involves repeatedly noticing when the mind has wandered and gently returning attention to that object. Over time, this trains the mind’s capacity for sustained, voluntary attention. Transcendental meditation, which uses silently repeated mantras, is one well-known form of this approach. So is breath-focused mindfulness, where the anchor is simply the physical sensation of breathing.
Open monitoring meditation
Open monitoring meditation – most commonly associated with mindfulness – involves a broader awareness of whatever arises in the present moment. Rather than fixing attention on a single object, the practitioner observes thoughts, sensations, and emotions as they come and go, without attaching to or judging them. The three-stage progression: Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi

Patanjali outlined an eight-limbed path toward self-realization, and the final three limbs describe the progressive stages of meditation itself: Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi.
Dharana – focused attention
Dharana means concentration or single-pointed focus – the sixth limb of Patanjali’s eight-fold path. In this stage, the practitioner directs attention to a chosen object and works to hold it there. The mind inevitably wanders, and the practice of Dharana consists of repeatedly noticing that wandering and redirecting attention back. This is not passive; it is the deliberate, trained effort to bring mental processes under voluntary control. Patanjali intentionally placed this stage before meditation itself, recognizing that you cannot genuinely meditate without first establishing a basic degree of sustained attention.
Dhyana – sustained attention (meditation proper)
When the effort of Dharana becomes sustained and relatively effortless, it deepens into Dhyana – what Patanjali actually called meditation. Dhyana is described as an unbroken flow of concentration toward the object of meditation, like pouring oil from one container to another – steady, continuous, and undisrupted. Unlike Dharana, which involves repeated effort to refocus, Dhyana is the state where that focus becomes natural and self-sustaining. The meditator is no longer struggling to hold attention; awareness simply flows toward the object without resistance. This stage corresponds closely to what psychology calls a state of “flow” – deep, absorbed engagement where self-consciousness recedes.
Samadhi – absorption
The final stage, Samadhi, is described as a state of complete absorption – where the distinction between the meditator, the act of meditating, and the object of meditation begins to dissolve. According to Patanjali, Samadhi begins when the mind’s awareness of itself concentrating diminishes, and awareness of the object entirely dominates. It is often described as a state of profound stillness, clarity, and interconnectedness. The Yoga Sutras describe multiple levels of Samadhi – ranging from states that still involve some cognitive activity (savitarka, savichara) to deeper states that are entirely content-free. Together, these three stages are known as Samyama – a single integrated process through which the meditator gains deep knowledge and mastery over the object of their focus.
What meditation is – and what it isn’t
Given how broadly the term “meditation” is used today, it helps to draw some clear boundaries. Practices such as guided visualization, self-hypnosis, prayer, contemplation, and breathing exercises like pranayama are related to meditation and share certain qualities, but they are not the same thing. The key distinction lies in the intention: meditation specifically aims to train and stabilize attention, and to cultivate a direct, non-conceptual awareness of experience. Relaxation may occur as a side effect of meditation, but relaxation alone is not meditation – its essential quality is the deliberate direction and refinement of awareness.
Research published in Frontiers-affiliated journals has noted that arriving at a single, all-encompassing definition of meditation remains genuinely difficult, given the diversity of practices across traditions. However, scholars broadly agree that all meditation techniques involve some form of attention regulation – whether focused or open – and that they are inherently embodied practices, involving both cognitive and somatic dimensions.

These states, once considered beyond scientific reach, are now being studied using high-resolution brain imaging in long-term meditators.
The convergence of ancient and modern understanding
What is striking about meditation, viewed across ancient texts and contemporary research, is how consistent the core picture remains. Whether you read Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras or a peer-reviewed neuroscience paper, the fundamental description is the same: meditation involves voluntary direction of attention, progressive quieting of mental noise, and deepening awareness of present-moment experience. The ancient framework of Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi maps almost precisely onto what psychologists now describe as focused attention, flow states, and altered states of consciousness.
A systematic review published in PubMed highlights that consistent meditation practice produces neuroplasticity – observable, lasting modifications in brain areas associated with emotional regulation, focused attention, and self-awareness. These are not subtle effects; they are structural changes to the organ that shapes your entire experience of life. Meditation, at its core, is not a passive rest.
