Not all psychological research is created equal – and that’s entirely by design. Whether a scientist is trying to understand why people feel happy, measure the effects of a therapy intervention, or simply describe how stress manifests in college students, the type of research they choose shapes everything: the questions they ask, the data they collect, and the conclusions they can draw. Understanding the different types of research in psychology isn’t just academic housekeeping – it’s the foundation of how we build reliable knowledge about the human mind.

How psychological research is classified
Research in psychology can be viewed through three distinct lenses. As outlined by researcher Ranjit Kumar, a research study can be classified from the perspective of its application (pure vs. applied), its objectives (descriptive, correlational, explanatory, or exploratory), and the mode of inquiry it uses (quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods). These three dimensions are not mutually exclusive – in fact, most real-world studies sit somewhere across all three simultaneously.
Research by application: pure vs. applied
The first way to categorize research is by asking: what is it for? This splits research into two broad camps – pure and applied.
Pure research
Pure research (also called basic or fundamental research) is driven by curiosity rather than immediate utility. It is conducted without any specific goal in mind, and its main aim is to advance knowledge and to identify or explain relationships between variables. The findings may not have direct commercial or clinical applications right away – and that’s perfectly acceptable. Pure research is the engine behind new theories, new ideas, and entirely new ways of thinking about human behavior.
Examples include developing a new methodology to measure stress levels, or testing a theoretical model of how memory consolidation works during sleep. These studies may not solve an immediate problem, but they lay the intellectual groundwork that applied researchers build on later.
Applied research
Applied research, by contrast, is purpose-driven. It is not carried out for its own sake but to solve specific, practical questions or problems, and it is often based upon pure research. In psychology, applied research might investigate which therapy technique most effectively reduces social anxiety, or how workplace interventions improve employee wellbeing. The results are designed for present use, not future theorizing.
It’s worth noting that the boundary between pure and applied research isn’t always clean. A study on the genetics of mental illness, for instance, could be simultaneously expanding fundamental knowledge and informing clinical treatment – demonstrating how both types of research often feed into each other.
Research by objectives: what are you trying to find out?
Once you know whether research is pure or applied, the next question is: what does it aim to accomplish? Research can be classified from the perspective of its objectives as descriptive, correlational, explanatory, or exploratory. Each of these serves a distinct scientific purpose.
Descriptive research
Descriptive research does exactly what its name suggests: it describes. It focuses on observing and describing behavior without testing specific relationships between variables, helping psychologists gather rich, detailed information about what people do, think, or feel in a particular context. Think of it as creating a thorough, accurate photograph of a psychological phenomenon as it naturally occurs.
Common methods include surveys, case studies, naturalistic observation, and psychological tests. Descriptive research is designed to provide a snapshot of the current thoughts, feelings, or behaviors of individuals. For example, a study documenting how frequently adults in a city report feelings of loneliness would be descriptive – it captures what’s happening, without trying to explain why or manipulate any variables.
The key limitation: because descriptive research doesn’t test cause and effect, its findings can be difficult to generalize beyond the sample studied.
Correlational research
Correlational research takes things a step further by examining whether and how two or more variables are related. Correlational research is designed to discover relationships among variables and to allow the prediction of future events from present knowledge. A study exploring whether sleep duration is associated with academic performance, or whether social support correlates with lower depression scores, would be correlational.
However, there is a critical caveat that every psychology student quickly learns: correlation does not imply causation. If research shows that people who exercise regularly tend to report higher wellbeing, we cannot conclude that exercise causes happiness. A third variable – say, income or social opportunity – might be driving both. Correlational research often serves as a stepping stone to more complex research designs, helping identify relationships worth investigating further.
Explanatory research
Explanatory research is where psychology moves from observing and associating to actually explaining. It asks why and how things happen. Explanatory research attempts to clarify how and why there is a relationship between two phenomena – for example, why a stressful lifestyle leads to health problems, or how home environment affects a child’s cognitive development.
This type of research typically involves experimental designs. Explanatory research aims to find a cause-effect relationship and deals with finding answers to the why or how behind a research question. In a well-designed experiment, researchers manipulate one variable (the independent variable) and observe its effect on another (the dependent variable), while keeping all other factors as controlled as possible. This is the only research approach that can legitimately establish cause and effect.
A classic example: randomly assigning participants to a gratitude journaling group versus a control group, then measuring changes in wellbeing over several weeks. If the journaling group shows greater improvements, researchers can confidently attribute the effect to the intervention itself.
Exploratory research
Exploratory research is the earliest stage of scientific inquiry. It seeks to explore areas where little is known, investigates the feasibility of conducting a particular type of research, and is applied when a researcher has little or no prior knowledge about a topic. It is inherently flexible and unstructured – ideal for generating hypotheses rather than testing them.
In practice, exploratory research might look like a small pilot study testing whether a new mindfulness app shows any initial promise, or a set of preliminary interviews to understand how a community experiences a psychological phenomenon. Exploratory research is the first step in a research project and is best suited for new topics or new angles to existing ones. It paves the way for more rigorous descriptive, correlational, and explanatory work down the line.
Research by mode of inquiry: how is the data collected?
The third dimension of classifying research concerns the type of data collected and how it’s analyzed. This is where the well-known distinction between quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods research comes in.
Quantitative research
Quantitative research deals in numbers. Quantitative research typically starts with a focused research question or hypothesis, collects a small amount of data from each of a large number of individuals, describes the resulting data using statistical techniques, and draws general conclusions about some large population. Surveys with rating scales, controlled experiments, and psychometric tests are all common quantitative methods.
The great strength of this approach is precision and generalizability – it can tell us, for example, that 68% of participants in a study showed reduced anxiety symptoms after eight weeks of cognitive behavioral therapy. What it can’t easily tell us is what that experience felt like for each individual.
Qualitative research
Qualitative research fills that gap. Rather than measuring and counting, it explores meaning, experience, and context. Qualitative method is a broad umbrella term for research methodologies that describe and explain individuals’ experiences, behaviors, interactions, and social contexts, with in-depth interviews, focus groups, and participant observation among the most commonly used tools.
Qualitative research can convey a sense of what it is actually like to be a member of a particular group or in a particular situation – what researchers often refer to as the “lived experience” of the participants. A study exploring what it genuinely feels like to recover from depression, or how survivors of trauma narrate their resilience, would be qualitative in nature. The trade-off: these findings are harder to generalize, since they come from smaller, context-specific samples.
It’s also worth noting that the line between qualitative and quantitative is sometimes blurred. The quantitative-qualitative distinction depends more on what researchers do with the data they have collected than with why or how they collected it. The same interview data could be analyzed thematically (qualitative) or coded and counted statistically (quantitative).
Mixed-methods research
Mixed-methods research combines both approaches strategically. Mixed-methods research avoids many of the criticisms directed at either approach alone, by canceling the effects of one methodology through including the other, and it triangulates results to offer higher validity and reliability.
A practical example: a researcher studying student stress might first run a large-scale survey to quantify how widespread the problem is across a university, then follow up with in-depth interviews to understand the personal stories behind the numbers. By combining both sets of data, the researcher achieves both breadth – how widespread stress is – and depth – why stress occurs. This makes mixed methods especially powerful for complex psychological and social questions.
Why these distinctions matter in practice
These three dimensions – application, objectives, and inquiry mode – don’t operate in isolation. A single research project can be applied in purpose, correlational in its objective, and quantitative in its method all at once. Understanding these categories helps both researchers and readers of research ask smarter questions: What was the study actually designed to do? Can it establish causation, or only association? Do the findings generalize to broader populations, or do they offer a deep but narrow window into one group’s experience?
Choosing the right type of research isn’t just a methodological decision – it’s a question of intellectual honesty. Claiming causal conclusions from a correlational study, or generalizing qualitative findings to millions of people, are the kinds of errors that erode public trust in psychological science. The key is that both qualitative and quantitative data inform psychological research methods used to understand behavior and mental processes – and each type of research, when applied appropriately, contributes something irreplaceable to that understanding.
