What is social cognition?
Social cognition refers to the mental processes that allow individuals to understand and navigate the social world. More precisely, it focuses on how people encode, store, retrieve, and use information about others. At its core, it investigates how cognitive processes – perception, attention, memory, and reasoning – operate specifically within social contexts.
According to research published in cognitive and clinical neuroscience, social cognition encompasses a broad range of abilities that allow individuals to understand themselves and others, make inferences about others’ intentions, feelings, and thoughts, and communicate effectively within social settings. This is not a passive process. The brain actively constructs an understanding of the social environment based on available cues, prior knowledge, and ongoing experience.
Social cognition gained prominence as a field in the late 1960s and early 1970s alongside the rise of cognitive psychology. There are four main components involved: observation, attribution, integration, and confirmation. These components work together to help us form coherent impressions of the people around us.
Person perception, on the other hand, focuses specifically on how we evaluate and form impressions of individuals. It involves judgments about someone’s traits, values, and personality – often formed within seconds of an encounter. Research on impression formation shows that certain traits, called central traits, carry disproportionate weight in shaping our overall impression of a person, while others – known as peripheral traits – play a lesser role depending on context.
Importantly, social and person perception are not just about gathering facts. They are interpretive processes shaped by the observer’s existing knowledge, expectations, and emotional state at the time.
The role of schemas in social cognition
A key mechanism through which social cognition operates is the schema.
